3 years ago Cotto, Margarito, Clottey were at the top of the Welterweight division and it was the most popular division.

Pacquiao is widely considered by many Americans the best in the world.

Dont be mad because Americans dont wanna watch boring as slappers like Cokezaghe beat up bums.

Hopkins is a Legend and he couldn't handle Calzaghe. You can say what you like but he adapted to Hopkins, nobody adapts to Hopkins. Calzaghe would beat Ward now, convincingly!

Im talking about Kessler. Who Ward beat more decisively.

A lineal champion that was also 43 years old.[/quote]

Again I'll agree (or concede if you like) that there's holes in his resume(see my original post in this thread), but you can't deny that it's impossible to dominate a weight class for 10 years without having to face at the bare minimum a handful of good fighters. If you have 20 odd defences then they won't all be world class. You don't see the convenience that it's only when Calzaghe's gone that the SMW divison is supposedly full of talent? Again as I previously mentioned, it's the same situation that Jones and Hopkins found themselves in one division north and south, they were far enough ahead of their competition that nobody else seemed to measure up.

Calzaghe beat a younger, fresher Kessler who had never lost (surely you know that when a fighter 'doesn't know how to lose' it has a positive impact on how they fight.) Ward headbutted the man half to death, but that's a subjective view I suppose.

You can all argue and wine about resume's and who's beat who, but at the end of the day, no matter what happens, one thing is certain... Calzaghe was a far far FAR greater boxer and warrior than Andre Ward will ever be! :blah

I feel is a disrespect to Wards talent to compare him to Calzaghe .

Bradley and Khan are pretty much even. Except that Bradley didnt get KO'd by a journeyman. And Cokezaghe was p4p 2 for a couple years. He wasnt on the P4P list before because he hadnt beaten anyone of note until he fought Lacy. You think Slappy Joes deserved to be rated ahead of the likes of Trinidad, Oscar, Mosley, Pac, Morales, Marquez, Barrera, Mayweather, Hopkins and Wright?

Are you high like your hero?

    Good thread.
    Interesting thoughts all across.

I don't rate Calslappy simply b/c of his slapping fighting style. He has some fast hands, and excellent defense, but his power was weaker than hell, and most of his T/KOs were bogus. Manfredo comes to mind.

As for Ward......he's just a hypejob extraordiniare. At least Slappy fought outside his hometown, and fought about every name there was to fight, albeit in a weaker era IMO.

I would take Joe to slap the **** outta Ward for a decisive UD, but I think Froch would KO Joe, and so would Bute. Kessler would be a close fight for Slaps, but I think Joe's D and fast hands would earn him a decision.

    Page at a time...
How can Ward beating Froch put Ward above Calzaghe? Froch lost to Kessler who Calzaghe beat when Kessler was coming off a loss. Froch isnt as good a SMW as undefeated Kessler.

How can he surpass? Wards biggest win is Kessler who beat Froch. Thats a Calzaghe leftover dip**** :patsch

Well lets look at who did what in each era and see what the results say.
Dirrell hasnt beaten any top SMWs and his best win is a DQ over a former MW who cant compete well at SMW.
    Sheika beat G Johnson :hi:

Ward we wont know as the best win he could achieve was over a Calzaghe leftover, and when he fought another Calzaghe leftover there are some that felt it was lucky not to be a draw.

    Look at B Mitchell -
    2 time WBA SMW champ
He beat #1 Liles (something Ward is praised for doing) by KO
drew with future 2 weight champ Girard
beat Siaca twice who went on to become WBA SMW champ who beat Mundine
beat former MW champ JC Green who beat a prime Joppy before Joppy was beaten by Trinidad or Hopkins.

Mitchell only lost by SD to Ottke in a fight many felt he won and was only ever beaten clearly once as a SMW.

Mitchells resume Doesnt look much different Ward or Frochs

Wards 2 best wins are Calzaghe leftovers .
How was Calzaghe protected as he has a better SMW resume than Ward by a long way.

Umm yeah, with the exception of Eubanks who was shot, drained and fighting on 2 weeks notice, Sheika and Brewer were C class at best.
