Ray Arcel very high on Dempsey but I heard this before from a lot of the old timers who saw Jack. I think Dempsey is highly under rated on ESB and the best fighter in the heavyweight division up until Joe Louis. Monte Cox on the other hand has an agenda, a good writer but is biased and it can not be disguised by the fact that he writes well.

Try hard to follow the conversation ... I call Firpo a murderous puncher, not a great fighter ... you denied it ... for the record , just check out the Ring's all time 100 greatest punchers list ... Firpo is on it and chubbby Rex is not ... so add them to your paranoid , conspiracy buff list after you put down your crayons ..

 

Not to 5 for me. Dempsey had a too much trouble in some of his championship fights. Top 8-10 for me. Dempsey's speed ( hand and feet ), reach, power, and ferocious display would make him a threat to everyone.

Many who saw Demspey felt he was a top 3 fighter until the 1960's.

 

Dempsey was too big a star for his own good but there was no one like him before that. Jack had the 1st million dollar gate and back then that was a ton of money. You can not take the Dempsey of the Tunney and Sharkey fights and see this as the best of Dempsey.

Tough as nails, murderous puncher, he was Mike Tyson but more rugged.

If Dempsey filled in for Lyle in the Foreman fight the result would have been Dempsey by KO

I see his flaws but he had the explosive power and he had the look to instill fear in a fighter like Tyson and Liston did to many of their opponents

 

One of the burgeoning themes on Dempsey of which is just starting to gets its due, is how Jack was a thoroughly complete fighter.

His blistering thesis will continue to enchant newcomers, but his variety of punches, inside hustle and defensive habits all come round to make their impression on you.

time...Some writer had the film modernized in proper sync, and he was
astonished at Dempsey's true handspeed and raw power...
Yes he must of had flaws, as all boxers do, but i honestly believe at his
best, no heavyweight in history would outfought him...As you say tough
as nails, with a blazing will, and the means to destroy...

I think his natural skill set was up there with the best of any heavyweight .. Dempsey for the most part was self-taught ... he never had , from the start, first rate trainers and conditioners ... he learned along the way and Kearns taught him some tricks but mostly Jack was self-taught ... Imagine him starting out at 19 with a Manny Steward and maximized ...
