That would be Meehan plus Flynn.

I don't think that highly of Sam Peter, but more reasons why Vitali is different than Williard. He has much more rely to on, and that's why he came back and still is successful even if his opposition is less than stellar to this point. Haye should fight him now because he's clearly ready for the taking.

I dont actually believe if matters at all whether Dempsey's loss to Flynn was a dive or whether it was legit.

That was Dempsey before he became the force that he became when he teamed up with Jack Kearns. He was just a raw prospect at that time, and according to his own story took the fight with a broken hand which prevented him training.

It just doesn't matter. Lots of great fighters lost fights on the way up before they had really formed at all into the finished articles they became later.
Dempsey always stressed that he became a far better fighter when he teamed up with Kearns, and his record shows that.

Great A, I did not have you in mind, when I used the term revisionists,of today debunking the skills of Jack Dempsey. Not at all. You are a fair and
worthy debater with your opinion, as you see it...Cheers, b.b.

god you really have a bee in your bonnet don't you - i leave the house for just an hour and look what happens

    1. OK maybe I'm about a year out :D - I think 1918 is the year most experts settle on as his prime year - but I was certainly the right side of his prime - he was certainly gathering pace and experience - 12 months later he was mixing with the likes of Carl Morris/Bill Brennan/ko'ing Flynn in a round etc

    2. Again you not saying anything that carries any weight/has fact written on it etcetc because everybody has agreed there is nothing conclusive - but I damn sure swing to the side that Flynn could never have KO'd Demps in the first round in a million years - if he could why isn't he considered one of the greatest heavyweights ever??? And why isn't Dempsey considered some also ran??

    3. I've got a book (probably ghost written though where Dempsey says he took a dive for easy money - and he was ashamed of it and he wish he'd never done it - and told himself he would damn sure never do it ever again. As I say though they so many stories - but I guess anyone can spin anything anyway they want it - American press managed to make the Afgan war seem like it wasn't illegal after all ?

    4. How hard did Johnny Sudenberg hit?? probably a lot harder than Flynn thats for sure - those knockdowns were legit (and how much did Demps weigh for Sudenberg?? Many middleweight can hit a lot harder than a lot of cruiserweights/small heavyweights can anyway - does that surprise you??

I have a book (admittedly probably ghostwritten but who knows about that either) in which Dempsey actually states that he did throw the fight for easy money and he was ashamed of himself for doing it and told himself he'd never ever do that kind of thing ever again

PS You're willing to admit the circumstances are suspicious?? :happy I think we could be making progress here!!

Only joking - pps please don't take anything i have typed as a genuine dismissal of you as a person - absolutely no offense has been meant to you personally or Bokaj or any of those other guys - it's gets the old blood flowing when we get into these heated debates but it's only meant as a bit of banter and to fire up a bit of argument to get the firey arguments and counter arguements going :yep (and the odd name call thrown in for good measure - but all within the confines of our great forum of course

Dempsey did take on and beat Sharkey himself, while past his prime.

Great article! Jack Dempsey has gotten criminally underrated over the last 30 years or so. He isn't just top ten, he should be clearly in the top five, below only Ali and Louis and perhaps Foreman or Holmes. Cox's research shows clearly just how highly thought of he was by those who actually saw him fight.

It is Nelson, and my personal favourite is Ali. Vitaly would come quite a long way down on that list.

You seem alright. I don't always agree with your reasoning, to put it mildly, but it's always good with someone that doesn't take it all to seriously. That just can have a laugh at it all. And you seem to be that type.:good

As for Dempsey, it's quite a lot with him that I like. He was exciting and ahead of his time in several aspects. But just as with Duran and Tyson, he's put on such a pedestal by some that it does make it hard to appreciate him fully.
