He caught alot of criticism after his dominating, one-sided loss to Georges St. Pierre. But in fairness to BJ Penn, he MOVED UP to 170 to fight a guy that has DOMINATED the entire division. Thiago Alves walks around at over 200lbs and has been destroying opposition in that division and got completely OWNED by GSP as well, Fitch = Owned by GSP, Koscheck = Owned by GSP, Hughes = Owned by GSP. Those are the best of the best at WW and muscular wrestler types who cut alot of weight to make the limit.
I think everyone respects the Warrior side of BJ, it just the trash talkin cant back it up so I'll run to Momma side that I hate personally. No doubt he's a great fighter though
Hey, I totally respect the fact that BJ moved up in weight and fought GSP. He was the guy who really pushed for the fight to happen. What I don't respect is the whining, crybaby ***** he became after the loss.
I agree, Penn is 1 of the top 4 p4p fighters in the world, he dropped from 2 to 4 on my list after that loss to GSP, he is the smaller man but wasnt really in the fight at all so he couldnt remain exactly were he was but he is still clearly the best LWT in the world & probably of all time until proven otherwise. What BJ tried to do in challenging GSP is the sort of thing us fans only get to see in our dreams & mythical matches. Its actually the equivalent of GSP challenging Anderson Silva, nothing more, nothing less. All the props in the world must go to Penn just as much as they have to GSP IMO because BJ is a true warrior thru & thru, he fights for the fans & he never quits, he`s great for the sport & I dont see no LWT beating him... I love Florian too but I think Penn is gonna beat him bad, depending on his mindset after that devastating loss to GSP. :good
I dont like that stuff either but BJ is a true fighter, he hates losing to anyone & he got dominated by GSP, its just sour grapes, it will pass, he must let it go for the Florian fight or he will lose again, this time at his best weight.... he still has the LWT crown, all is not lost & if GSP steps up to fight the LHWTs, Penn can certainly trouble any WWT out there if not outright beat them, he is that good.
bj is a very talented fighter but he is simply an a-hole... and what the f*ck was his reason when he licked sherk's blood after he won? when i watched it i was very happy coz i was rooting for him and then suddenly i was like "what the ****? that **** is just wrong"... he should learn about "class" from gsp.
I ripped BJ to shreds for his performance with GSP, not because he lost but because he was so mentally broken. That being said, he is so dominant in his weightclass of 155, he could be considered still pound for pound great. Just because BJ likes to fight at high weightclasses, and hasn't dont well there lately doesn't mean he is any less dominant at 155, one of the major factors of PfP is dominance within your weightclass. The same applies to GSP in a way: People keep asking him to move to 185 to prove himself, I say he has no need to, he is a welterweight and being the welterweight champ is his job. If he wants to go, nobody should stop him, but equally nobody should say anything negative if he wants to remain a profesional welter, that is his position in the sport; achieving perfection there is his job description.
you never seen that before? he has done that couple of times. He did it against matt hughes the first time they fought. He did it against stevenson also and he will do it again after he beat florian into pieces.
Penn had a right to ***** about the fight after learning his been cheated on during the fight. Penn is a submission super master:nut if gsp didn't have vaseline around his shoulder when penn tried to attempt that submission then he could have caught him and proly submit him. Weak at best; there was grease but grease is slipperly both ways, it hurt GSP in terms of control and takedowns. The commision wiped it off, an grease very often moves from the face to the other parts of the body quickly anyway. BJ had a right to point it out, it shouldn't happen, but it wouldn't have resulted in anything but him quitting once again.
Torres absolutely is. Mike Brown probably deserves it too. Mike Browns last 4 wins have been against atop higher quality opposition; Big Frog Curran was a top 10 or 5, always a tough fighter. Then beat Faber who was the champ and worlds best at 145 and a top 10 PfP guy himself Beat a contender in Garcia, not a huge feather in his cap, but doing it with a huge right hand (Garcia's own game) seconds into a fight followed by a perfect arm triangle, is worthy of note again beat Faber, the #2 at 145. Now for Penn at 155 Beat Pulver, good redemtion win, good fashion winning it, but while Penn was clearly a factor dramatic falling off of Pulver, one has to wonder how far into decline he already was, not to mention Pulver belongs at 145 Destroyed Joe Stevenson in a title fight, Stevenson was a good contender, and BJ ran a perfect clinic. Stevenson is no PfP contender though Great win over the #2 guy at the time, and all time great Sean Sherk, grean win for BJ bot in prestige and style. Quinton being ranked above BJ though? Total joke, absolute crock, even if its a very very old list when Quinton was champ.
Aside from Sherk, Penns fights at 155 have been mediocre at best. Pulver is a 145'er and cant even win fighting guys like Leonard Garcia and Josh Grispi. However, Penn is a dominant 155'er and a guy who is likely going to stomp Kenny Florian who is wildly overrated considering his 2 best wins were over Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson.
In readin all your posts over the weekend, is there any fighter ever than isnt overrated to you? Its getting boring mate
Mediocre? Pulver is a former lightweight champ Stevenson vs Penn was a #1 vs # 2 match up @ lightweight since sherk was suspended.
