In general, is it allowed to score a round 10-8 with no knockdown or foul?

For instance, some of the rounds of Mayweather vs Gatti for my part could be scored 10-8 because they were so lopsided, even if there were no knockdowns.

However, are official judges allowed to do it?

Yep, when it's a particularly dominant round.

Yes, a 10-8 round can be scored when there's no KD or point deduction. I also believe that you can score a round 10-9 even when there is a KD.

If a fighter totally dominates the round, then a 10-8 round could be justified.

Yea , its a relativly new thing, and its up 2 the judges discression. However, ive never agreed with it, if a guy is taking a shellacking, and shows the hart and chin to stay up-right, he deserves his 9 points imo.

Since when has boxing (the art of hitting and not bein' hit) been all about brute force and knockdowns??

In theory, wouldnt this mean that if say, Cory Spinks is totally emarrassin' a guy with his normal gameplan of moving and countering, immensely frustratin' his oponent, but doesnt hurt him physically, should he get a 10-8 round?? Its as dominant as a battering in BOXING terms
    .

Please let me know your opinion on what ive said ChrisPontius, as i respect your posts and opinions!

Yes, a very dominant, one sided rounds should be scored 10-8 but let me tell you it's VERY RARE in titles fights.

You could score a few 10-8s in the Calzaghe-Lacy, Hopkins-Tarver or Kessler-Andrade fights and maybe all rounds 10-8 in the Cotto-Gomez fight.

But as I've said, 10-8 without a penelty or an 8-count is very rare in title fights. The 10 point must sytstem was originally designed to give the round 10-9 to the winner and -1 if there's a penelty or a KD.

    Yes it is

I actually was judging last year and I score a round 10-7 with no knockdowns.

I had it at 10-8 for the dominane and the kid had a point taken away for low blows

Well, considering a knockout gives you an instant win, i'd say it has been about brute force and knockdowns for a long time :)

It depends on the case, but yes, in most cases it should be 10-8. For instance, Mayweather landed a shitload of power punches on Gatti but never really seemed to hurt him (apart from the KD in the first). And by "hurt" i mean being out on his feet. Those bodyshots were vicious though. But despite Gatti not being "hurt", i'd say there was at least one if not more than one 10-8 round in that fight.

Yea but its rare to see it amongst high level professionels when the skill levels are usually so high.

    Nope

If you lose a close round but score a knockdown, its still 10-8

if course if you are totally dominated but manage a knockdown, well thats just one big ****ing headache and probably a 10-9 round to the guy who gets the knockdown

Remember is several governing bodies regs, there is a 10 point MUST scoring system, which means the winner must get 10, unless there is a deduction for a foul.

I have never judged a fight where this has been an issue. You score a knockdown, its automatically 10-8, 99% of the time
