In general, there's a lot more respect for Benn than for Eubank.

I assume you are talking about James ( or is it Rourke?) but the fact is that both Nigel and Chris never travelled to face the americans so the issue of respect is confined to that space, well, maybe not even in there since Irish Steve Collins beat them both twice... Not to mention Sugar Boy Malinga who drew with Benn and was stopped in 5 by Jones, actually I can only remember Chris fighting here in "the Treat in the Heat" against an american and I was there...

But I correct myself, Chris did fight Malinga, Tony Thornton and Lindell Holmes in Birmingham, Glasgow and Kensington, Rocchigianni in Berlin and Dan Schommer in Sun City but he only fought in the US in his first 5 four rounders... How could he be respected by James Toney?

 

benn fought 5 times in the states, including an 8th round stoppage of dewitt and he smashed iran barkley out in 1. he also fought in italy against the highly fancied galvano, stopping him in the fourth.

This is complete nonsense!!! Benn smashed up both DeWitt and Barkley in their own backyard, plus Galvano in Italy. Eubank a lot of the time was more of a showman than a fighter unless the other guy made the fight, but he still beat Rocchi in Germany plus fought in a number of other countries. If Toney actually has a passport, I can only assume it's been revoked due to his drug transgressions!!!

Actually, Benn mentioned the Barkley fight to Toney but it was not enough to bring "Lights Out" to the UK, Benn made it up with the G Man fight though while Toney lost credibility losing a lopsided decision to RJJ and twice close decisions to Montell Griffin...

 

He also got gifted the Tiberi fight.........

 

So Thulane Malinga didn't lose one and won one against Benn? Benn fought 87.5% of times in the UK (42 out of 48 fights) so he I feel it's fair to say that he travelled to the US just to come back from the Watson loss. And since winning those 5 including Barkley, he lost to Eubank and just went to Italy to fight Galvano for the WBC SMW strap... He not even fought Collins in Ireland so the respect issue is all about the domestic rivalry between Eubank and Benn, they didn't fight against the other SMW titlists outside the UK and could have... Michael Nunn and Don King were there at Old Trafford in 93, why didn't they try to get it on with Toney, RJJ or even Nunn?

 

Benns first two fights in the US were to get over Watson but the in second two he won and then defended a world title. Being at ringside for a fight doesn't mean ****....teh fact that Toney or RJJ didn't fight Benn or Eubanks can't be placed solely at the British boxers door. RJJ in particular was going through some pretty dodgy opposition at the time.

Benn was English, of course he's going to fight the vast majority of his bouts in England/U.K!!! If Nunn, Toney or Jones ever had a passport I can only assume they've mislaid it!!!

 

Man, I know what I'm talking about, just that I get these "alzheimers" once in a while and remembered Benn vs Malinga 1 as a draw, sorry... When I was there and was collecting tapes from Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street like a maniac, receiving "Boxing Monthly" here and writing letters to Gary Mason on Sky Sports, Benn was already respected by everyone and the Dark Destroyer nickname was something I never heard of before... There's no issue about the respect Benn got and gets, he demolished Barkley who beat Hearns and was beaten by Duran in Panama City, and Benn beat Robbie Sims in the year after. Same thang for Eubank(s) since I payed to watch him fight here... Problem is you get obstructed in the interpretation of facts by nationality prejudice. Once and for all, even Watson was given tremendous credit when he was kayoed by McCallum, Watson and Eubank get along ever since their fateful night, there's only a never ending hatred issue between Benn and Eubank... On the Global perspective, there's no comparision in the level of opposition Jones and Toney had and Eubank's or Benn's in the 90s on... Lou Gent, Henry Wharton, Nicky Piper ( I can't even recognize with a double chin as a commentator nowadays), Ray Close? Those were all domestic fights sanctioned by the WBC and the WBO, they could have had other fights on English soil still, look at Calzaghe who is undeniably the best SMW in the world and is called by every american great... Benn will be remembered as the great fighter at the global scale that was a player in the brutal, horrible McClelland fight all you sadistic guys re-watch and Eubank ( who curiously was a NY Golden Gloves) will be remembered cause he beat Benn and Watson and was a wacko - he said of himself on "Boxing Monthly" that he had Dr Jekyll Mr Hide personality, even his wife couldn't stand him anymore. I'm outa here Lee me alone DAMN!

 

That is the Greatest fake Controversy of all Times ( along with Chavez vs Whitaker) since I have that fight, the Broadcasters were biased and against Jackie and James, Dave Tiberi came forward and landed most on Toney's shoulders and arms, he had no power whatsoever to hurt him as Whitaker didn't out-punch Chavez conclusively that night in San Antonio... Go and sell that Bull to somebody else. Toney showed no respect for Benn and Chris and called every british fighter a bum, I never said the same but you gat to see, nobody calls Calzaghe, Witter, Hatton a bum nowadays, how come?
