In hindsight, Khan’s record is impressive

    Hi Guys
    New to the board so please go easy!!
    I wouldnt particularly call my self an Amir Khan fan but neither am i a hater. I feel the general conception in boxing is that Khan has taken an undeserved route to wolrd title status. However despite the talk at the time of Khan fighting no hopers, bums, past its and fat super bantamweights, looking back at the Boltonains first 20 fights prior to his world title shot in my opinion his record is far better than many people give him credit for

    His first 8 fights, all within the space of a year were against modest at best opposition but that’s no different to any other up and coming fighter and a similar path to what the Olympians are taking at the moment.
    His first fight of note for me was a first round knockout of Ryan Barrett after only a year of being a pro. Barrett has since beat decent Bradford fighter Femi Fehintola and fought for a WBU lightweight world title

    His next fight of note in my opinion and possible the one he received most criticsm for was his 8th round victory over Scotsman Willie Limond. Khan was ridiculed for being put down by feather fisted Limond but got off the canvas to retire his opponent. Limond unbeaten since went on to the IBO International intercontinental and WBU lightweight title.

    Next were impressive knockouts over Scott Lawton and Graham Earl. Perhaps Earl had seen better days but had held the WBU title however Lawton has been in impressive form since and fought a brave fight against John Murray for the British title

    Victories followed against Gairy St. Clair a former Superfeather weight world champion who had beaten Cassius Baloyi and former WBU superfeather weight world champion Micheal Gomez as well as HOF Marco Antonio Barrera before his wide unanimous decison over Kotelnik for the world title

    So in hindsight surely his record is more impressive than he is given credit for and is it a classic case of the British public (not so much boxing fans) putting down a promising British athlete. I think that he will never get rid of his critics untill get get back into the ring with Prescott

    19 (14) - 2 (2) - 0 - 1 isn't great.

    Stoppage losses to Prescott and Limond, and the no-contest with a shot Barrera.

    His best is win Kotelnik, that the only one that stands up as a world class 140lb win.

    I agree that he gets a lot of undeserved stick but the fact that former foes have gone on to win the prestigious WBU 'title' doesn't mean too much, IMO. People can pick holes in his record but the Kotelnik win was very impressive. Funny how all of a sudden Kotelnik is a mug since Khan has beaten him, though:roll::good.

    This Limond 'loss' has to stop. Long count or not, Khan would've got up before 10 - he was just following the ref's count, as all boxers are trained to do. as for MAB, even if it had been a no contest, the fact is that a young, speedy heavyish handed Khan was always gonna beat MAB at that weight and at that stage of the Mexican's career.

    Turn on your stopwatch when Khan gets put flat on his ass - then stop it when he is asked if he is ready to continue :good

    I'm just playing WUM because I know it's a sore subject for Khan fans :lol:

    I still believe he got away with a lot in that fight, particularly that 'favour', but equally, you cannot take away from the heart and balls he showed, firstly to get up, then survive the round, then force Limond's corner to retire their man at the end of the next stanza.

    It's always been a decent record. The only reason people moan about it is because Khan was (and is) prematurely promoted as a world class fighter, and the record obviously isn't world-class yet, with the Kotelnik win being the only world-class win at the moment.

    Calling it a Limond KO is just daft...Khan wasn't hurt badly and was looking at his corner and just doing what they told him without paying attention to the ref....giving it to Limond would be the meanest of mean technical decisions....everyone forgets what condition Willie ended up in just a round later.

    I like this. Whatever you think about the Limmond fight, the Barrera fight was clearly a no-contest. It was one of the most disgraceful things I've seen in a boxing ring.
