In his prime, was Michael Nunn a more talented boxer than Joe Calzaghe?

Probably in a more conventional sense.

He was an amazing athlete but Joe had other intangibles that saw him succeed..Joe was a very impressive athletic specimen himself.

 

Yes. Nunn in his prime(when he beat Tate) was as talented as ANY fighter could be. Too bad he burnt out so quickly. He had the talent to be an atg.

Flashier, yes. More talented? Depends on how you define "talent". Being able to adjust and having a phenomenal rate of recovery and stamina are things I consider talent because they're qualities that 1000 fighters could work on the exact same amount and you'd be lucky to find 1 who'd match the level Calzaghe did them at, but everyone defines it a little differently. For my money, it's Calzaghe and that's who I'd bet on if they were to fight.

I think it would be easily argued that Nunn was one of the most gifted Middleweights ever. He lacked Calzaghe's Focus, determination, discipline, and on and on. Calzaghe is clearly the better fighter from an ATG perspective because of these qualities.

And don't forget Joe's other talents, hand speed, foot speed, almost preternatural judgement of distance...

Far more natural skill and ability, whether you want to talk about how far beyond his opposition he looked or just his physical tools... Yes to both.

Of course Calzaghe had far more drive and determination. But Nunn at his best had people as excited as Curry did, people were gushing about him.

 

Definitely. Calzahge, never really got to show how good he was or wasnt, because he never really faced the fighters he should have. There was fights with Jones, Toney, Micalzewski, Hopkins, all that Warren avoided, and kept him fighting garbage.
