People are placing emphasis on Hopkins right because southpaws are known to be open for a counter right. They are mentioning it because Hopkins is so good at timing it against southpaws also. Watch all of the 12 southpaws Hopkins has beaten and you'll see why everyones talking about this punch. I believe people will talk about it so much that Cazaghe will spend so much time and effort protecting against it that Hopkins will bang and hurt him with other punches that he throws just a well, such as the left hook, uppercut, and jab. The straight right is the key, but expect it to be used to open other equally effective shots for Hopkins. Remember that uppercut Hopkins hurt Trinidad with? The way he falls in, Calzaghe is a real suck for an uppercut. When he gets hurt with it he'll step back and BANG! Straight right, and off balance, Calzaghe will see the canvas. Watching Hopkin's precision punching and timing is a thing of beauty! Much better then watching someone throw 400 missing punches with 10 landing.
He has very underated power. That straight right is DANGEROUS. He hurt Taylor with it, He put Tarver down with it and Tarver has an above average chin, and as you seen from the video above knocked out Trinidad with it. Lets not forget that Hopkins knocked Tarver down at 175. So obviously he has some power cause he moved up from 160. I'm gonna go with Hopkins.
I think the first clip is most relevant and he throws the right without even looking. I would be absolutely gutted if Hopkins beat Calzaghe swinging blind.
It looks blind and on instinct. However I just wanted some of the others to bite lol... Someone has already posted this link http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7347667.stm But I think at about 8 minutes there are some textbook examples of Hopkins' right hand.
Calzaghe will have noticed that Hopkins when throwing the right follows in with his head and will tag hime all night long for that.
That's the key. Slaps versus solid punching. I've never ever seen Hopkins throw one slapping punch. Over half of Joe's are slaps.
in the fight after tito, hopkins lands a lead right flush and floors robert allen in their 3rd fight robert allen is a southpaw the same shot b-hop landed and floored tarver with in that first video... tarver, another southpaw then in his most recent fight, b-hop landed a couple lead rights flush against winky and wobbled him a couple of times... winky... again another southpaw and a defensive master to boot
