In retrospect, did we treat Jeff Lacy too harshly?

I mean, after his fight with Calzaghe everybody was treating Lacy like ****, saying he was overrated, terrible, etc. People were dissing on Lacy more than praising Calzaghe after their bout, and most said that Calzaghe still needed to prove himself, that beating Lacy was nothing. But now that Calzaghe's shown himself to be a truly great fighter, were we all too unkind to Lacy?

you have 2 version`s of lacy

the one going into the calzaghe fight

    and the post calzaghe lacy.

IMO lacy has lost all confidence in himself now and is a shadow at the moment.

    :huh

How does this particular fight change people's thoughts on Lacy?

Most people were expecting Calzaghe to win a bit easier yesterday, and some of his die hard fans are now saying he's "slipping"

Sometimes we get so caught up in the hype of a particular fighter that we turn on him the moment things go wrong and he doesn't match up to what we thought. It's almost as if we're saying "You're not as good as I thought u were so I'm gonna find someone else to root for." I think that's what happened to Lacy. He was a media creation and the same media that built him up left him for dead after the Calzaghe fight. With that being said, I think we did treat Jeff pretty harshly.

I'm not immune to this. I got caught up in the Lacy bandwagon like alot of people. So much so that I totally disregarded the damning evidence of the Sheika fight. I was shocked to see Lacy struggle so much against a guy that really had no business being in a title fight to begin with. I convinced myself a few months later that the fight was just a hiccup after Lacy got back on track and stopped Rubin Williams. That's how hype works. Bad performances aren't given too much credence and are quickly made up for with good matchmaking.

It does annoy me when people talk **** on Lacy.

He seems like a really good guy, he doesnt talk **** about fighters, he doesnt try to act like a gangsta, he seems like a good role model and sports star compared to alot of these other guys and I dont like it when everyone talks ****.

He was a great amature and won the bronze in the olympics. He was a good fighter before the calzaghe fight. So what if he didnt turn out to be an ATG. Not every fighter is going to be at the top level. Thats no reason to hate on him and talk **** and say he sucks, he was overrated, ect ect.

I'm disappointed that he's no longer the same fighter. He was fun to watch.

Have to agree with you - he took his defeat with humility against a top-3 PFP'er, only to be deserted by everyone. It's all well-and-good looking back with 20-20-hindsight, but virtually an entire nation wrote of Joe prior to that fight, so don't blame Lacy for believing the hype - it was impossible for him to escape it.

I do think he's a good fighter - he just came up against a great fighter. Since then, his fights haven't been good to watch, but as the boxers amoungst you all keep saying, boxing is as much a mental sport and a physical. In short, Jeff's confidence was/is at an all-time low - unfairly so.

So don't judge him on his fights since Joe - judge him as he was... a good fighter with malliable potential.

Be thankful - at least he's not Audley. :patsch

Jeff Lacy is never ever going to get respect since it's the same bunch of 'fans' trashing him who called him the New Tyson. But as I've said before, calling him the next big p4p thing was YOUR mistake guys!

He's not gonna get the respect as Calzaghe ruined his career, shoulder injuries came and there you've got a great power puncher who doesn't have the power anymore.

You know what? It's horrible how a nice guy like Jeff, who gave us some great KOs and brought true power to the SMW division is getting all the trash because a European fighter kicked his a**... Hatton got his a** kicked, and in the very next moment his fans chanted louder than ever. PacMan's support became stronger than ever after the Morales loss. Even Sturm's fanbase is at it's best after the Castillejo loss. I'm sorry, but that has to tell you the difference between real fans and fake fans.

His so-called fans betrayed Jeff Lacy and he became something like a circus clown among them nowadays. Everyone dares to **** on him since no one is telling them to STFU. Horrible, truly horrible, you should be ashamed of yourselves!

Yes, because Lacy's a classy guy. There's plenty of fighters that are at or below his level that don't get near the hate he got. Instead of people dissing Lacy because he made the bandwagon fans look bad, they should've held the "fans" that overhyped the hell out of him and then threw him away like yesterday's trash accountable. Those are the people that trashed him the worst- the bandwagoners who had no problem rooting for him as long as he was "the next Tyson". Other guys have been dominated in title fights without the people around them just throwing in the towel on them afterwards (which, oddly enough, should've happened in the fight).

They were probably just in hiding since Tyson lost to Douglas. As soon as another explosive KO fighter comes along, they'll probably jock his nuts until he loses, then throw him to the wolves, too.
