I still believe that Mayweather's most impressive performance was against Diego Corrales... Back at 130, Mayweather was a monster boxer-puncher, with superb mobility along with a fair-share of power. He dismantled a 1st class fighter with ridiculous ease, using the jab and left hook all night long to brutalize Corrales. 130 was Floyd Mayweather's prime weight, no question. At 147 and 154, he takes next to NO chances at all and acquired a ''runner'' reputation. But it was obvious, because he is fighting WAY bigger guys. Floyd Mayweather is a great fighter, possibly the best 130 pounder in history....But I still believe Roberto Duran would have beat him....One thing Hatton doesn't do but Duran was EXCELLENT at is feinting. Along with a much better defense than the Hitman, I'm sure Manos de Piedra could have made the Pretty Boy not so pretty, even in defeat.
Agreed.Vs Corrales he was absolutely stunning. His speed was phenomenal. But as for him loosing to Duran.. its all moot.Duran was a great puncher but he was quite 1 dimensional.Certainly at 135 it would have been a great fight pick em fight. But id still favor PBF as he could tame Duran with his sound fundamentals.
He beat Leonard because Leonard stood infront of him.Watch the rematch and see Leonards sweet box punching.
Now why would the rematch tell the real story more than the first match-up. In the rematch, Duran had wanted more time to drop weight as he had balooned a bit after the first fight. But the Leonard camp was aware of his weight problems and pressed the earlier date. Duran had been using diuretics and laxatives to make the last few pounds. On fight day, he had bowel cramps and during the figh, badly needed a **** (Some say, even began one, during the sixth round). So he quit, but not on his stool (oops, no pun intended) but by walking away in the middle of a round. He wasn't hurt. He was frustrated, but he was also having colic cramps, unrelated to Leonard's punches. So again, why would the rematch tell the real story more than the first match-up ? At least in the first match-up, both men were fully trained and prepared. And Duran won.
I think the point about feinting is a good one. One of the few fighters that ever gave Floyd any problems was Emanuel Augustus. It wasn't his awkward style that seemed to throw Floyd off balance, it was the feints!
Floyd would figure Duran out as well and would fight exactly like the 2nd Duran Leonard fight......he would never try and beat Duran at his game like Sugar did.
