i do find it peculiar how for instance you cannot go into a gerald mcclellan thread on this board without feeling the wrath, bile and hatred from at least one poster in it towards him for his alleged crimes committed against animals. people suggesting he got what he deserved etc.

however wander into a monzon thread and you'll very rarely see such attitude towards him for being a literal murderer.

Monzon was actually evil. The way he treated the women in his life was terrible.

    Still ...

My recollection of Monzon is that his private life never really made big news. Not even when he was shot by his wife did the story go too far, because Monzon wouldn't speak to reporters.

The murder was something altogether different; something no one would ever dream of condoning. However, it occurred quite a while after he retired, when Monzon was no longer being talked about regularly in boxing terms and, in some respect, I suppose was treated as something of a separate heinous act. I think, therefore, fans of his boxing find it easier to detach this event from 'Monzon the Boxer'.

I never took too hard against fighters who had an arrogant demeanour, but didn’t do anything particularly bad outside the ring.

Lol at "lose control." By most accounts, he was a piece of **** who regularly abused women and other non-fighters.

I don't remember much, if any, of this being reported at the time (other than Monzon's wife shooting him). And, I think that's what the difference is here. When a boxer's personality is wide open, known and entwined with their boxing and public image, the boxing and the man is perceived as being one and the same.

It neither excuses their subsequently revealed behavior or later accursed actions but it might explain why it's easier to separate the boxing personality from the man.

Again another poster that wants to put me under a microscope.
The things ur mentioning came out after his retirement.
There is obviously no excuse for violence towards women.
Now if a man was trying to take liberties and Monzon straightened him out so what myself and most other people would do the same.
Get off ur moral high horse

We get it. You think he was a cool bad-ass so you're happier turning a blind eye to the other stuff. That's fair--I'm sure we all do it for at least some fighters and entertainers.

By the way, do you know much about his violence out of the ring? What liberties did men take with him? From your earlier post, it seems like you thought he was ok until he "eventually" lost control and murdered his wife. He abused other women throughout his career. If you interpret my being disgusted by a pos who does that type of stuff as some kind of moral high horse, then... :bananaride

Are some of you guys f#cking serious.
Monzons extra curricular activities didnt even come to light until he was retired.
So lets set this straight once and for all cause all of a sudden i fell like im being chastised by the cast of the View.
I do not condon his violence towards women. I do not condone him killing his wife.
Im talking about his persona when he was fighting when no one openly knew that he was abusing women and eventually killing one.
So again the persona he had when he was fighting was one of a cold aloof type who didnt take **** off people and let his fists do the talking in the ring without the idiotic behavior of a paz or a hamed.
Now is this so f#cking hard to understand? I mean really WTF already

    Andre Ward. :vomiton22je:
Even though he is comes across as reasonably intelligent and I have plenty of respect for his winners mentality and for taking on Kovalev in the first place, I find it hard to find anything likeable about the man. Some of his behaviour since the Kovalev fight doesn't jive with the pious character he likes to portray and I could live without all the 'Son of God' (which strikes me as quite a strangely blasphemous monicker) good clean church-going family man routine. His sense of entitlement and fighting style (billy-goat vs Kessler, rugby tackle vs Kovalev etc etc) further add to my distaste.

(Up until the Kovalev fight I didn't mind him so much, maybe I am just bitter about losing ££££, never mind though, Sergey will KO him in the rematch:greedy:)
