Here's a wee plug for one of our own, Adam Pollack, who set out to write the definitive account of the early heavyweight champions. Certainly, in the case of the likes of Jim Jeffries and Bob Fitzsimmons, Adam wrote the definitive books; i own all his early ones and they are exceptional. Now he's taken on Jack Dempsey and, as per his Jack Johnson books, he's done it in two parts and "Part I: The Making of a Champion" is available now on Amazon: North America: https://www.amazon.com/dp/194978303...+J+Pollack&s=books&sr=1-2&text=Adam+J+Pollack Europe: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1949783...+ring+with+jack+dempsey&qid=1600293333&sr=8-2 This stuff isn't for everyone: it's for us. Hardcore boxing fans that are interested in HW history. This content is protected I haven't actually read it, but i've no fear in recommending it, i've read so many of his others. They are sheer class.
If there is enough new material, yes. I prefer boxing books when the subject is living and available for interview.
I received it a week ago and read it cover to cover. Ends with his victory over Willard. Lots of info gleaned from newspaper reports of the day, both positive and negative on Dempsey. Very detailed descriptions of his major fights; in fact too much info that becomes repetitive at times. I think it should have been edited a bit more pre release. Amazing amount of research. I learned a lot about Dempseys early, pre Willard bouts. Too bad none of them were filmed because I believe he would be a lot better appreciated now. He obliterated some very good boxers. Interesting that he fought three black boxers, and frequently had black sparring partners. I'm sure in part 2 that Pollack will cover the Wills issue...anyone who says Dempsey was physically afraid to fight Wills is an idiot. Pre Willard there was no reason to fight either Kid Norfolk or Wills as he needed to defeat the white boxers in his way in order to meet Willard. Beating either Wills or Norfolk would have meant nothing...it was the likes of Fulton and Miske that he had to go though to earn a shot at Willard. Also, Pollack makes very clear the racial situation of early 20th Century US with photos and stories about race riots and lynchings and puts it all in context with respect to the color line in HW boxing. A welcome and in fact necessary book for the library of all boxing fans.
I have very fond memories of Dempsey vs Willard because it was the first live boxing match I took my grandson to watch.
Is that the same Luis Ortiz Fury avoids like the plague? LOL Who is Fury looking to fight in December? Let me guess, some obscure guy that his fans will build up as some dangerous monster. In the end, it will be a terrible fight.
Imagine thinking Fury avoids a 150 year old Cuban with a 6 round gas tank. Ortiz can't handle Fury Ortiz couldn't even handle Hammer, Fury went through Hammer for fun
Have they fought? Why not fight Ortiz in December instead of some obscure fighter? Other than Wilder, Fury has fought subpar opposition since his comeback. You can't deny that Ortiz would be a step up.
I'd be more interested to see Fury fight a young gunner like Micheal Hunter who has been mentioned than an old veteran who is considered technically sounder but hasn't got any fight left in him. I've already put my position, the only man i'm interested to see fight Fury (should he prove he can handle a big man) is Usyk due to his ability & skill. If Fury fights Ortiz all we'll hear about is this false notion that he struggles with southpaws then he'll blow through Ortiz with his superior jab & gas tank and people will forget about it. Ortiz will crumble against a big heavy like Fury.
Hunter would be a good stay busy fight. I'm just curious to see how Fury would do against Ortiz, compared to Wilder.
