In the Ring With Jack Dempsey - Part I: The Making of a Champion, by Adam J. Pollack is the most thorough and detailed book ever written about former world heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey. This book (the first of two) chronicles Dempsey's life and career from its start up to his winning the world heavyweight championship, fight by fight, as told by those who saw the contests and reported on them at the time, utilizing multiple local next-day newspaper reports. This includes training, predictions, pre-fight hype, and discussions about the opponents.

As with other books in the In the Ring series, this book also discusses the context of the times, the color line and race in boxing and society (offering the perspectives of both white and black-owned newspapers), World War I, Dempsey's personal and managerial choices, and how these topics affected the sport and Dempsey's life and career. Even new facts about the controversial Jim Flynn fight are revealed. Boxing fans will obtain knowledge and insight into Jack Dempsey's life and career like never before.

560 pages, with over 550 rare photos, illustrations, cartoons, and fight advertisements.

I don't know what I'm looking forward to more; the content in the book, or the arguments on this forum it produces.

Probably the content in the book.

Good luck. With so many controversies about Dempsey's career, it's up to the writer to list the facts. Flynn landed hard and early. Demspey was down and out, his own brother threw in the towel.

Jess Willard said he found a bolt of metal in the ring and kept it his entire life. I wonder if that will be in the book? The damage Willard suffered was tremendous. No other fighter since had worse in such a short amount of time. Dempsey himself ran out of the ring when he thought the match was over earlier. You'd figure he'd be celebrating. Instead he looks like he was trying to hide something.

Was Dempsey down three times vs .Firpo as Klompton claimed in a highly edited film?

Did Dempsey have a 77" reach? I think 73" is more like it.

Lots of questions. Might as well address the fake news article on Johnson vs. Dempsey somewhere in the woods of Canada with both fighters never flatly denying it. The listed result was KO 7 for Dempsey.

How can anyone disprove an event that happened over 100 years ago? All of the equipment and evidence is gone. Demspey ran out of the ring instead of celebrating after round one, to me this is highly suspicious. He also bet on himself to score a 1st round KO vs a durable man.

Willard thinks there was something in the gloves, perhaps not in the wraps, but inserted afterwards. Willard found a bolt int he ring, and kept it for the rest of his life. Some claim they can see metal falling out of Dempsey's gloves on film. It would have to be a very clear film.
