Anomaly or not, it was a specific plan to confuse leonard and it failed miserably. Both fighters were far removed from their prime, it cannot be denied. I wouldn't use it as a barometer for how good marvelous was. Very competitive fight after the first 4. I think I had it 8-4 leonard.
No, it's a bit unfair, I know. But when I watch him against Duran I also kind of get that feeling... But it really is harsh on someone who dominated so many good fighters, I suppose. Yeah? I had it a draw last time I scored it. Don't think Leonard did much after the first five rounds.
Really good read. Thanks!:good This is the paragraph that sticks out for me: "Hagler: Anyone who says I was slowing down from the Hearns fight and the Mugabi fight no, I wasn't. But maybe I wanted them to think I was? If I looked good out there, Leonard would never come. Everybody's looking [for] a possibility. [If] I'm vulnerable, they could win. For me, I could have retired after Mugabi. But there was one more guy that I wanted to fight." Don't know if I really believe this, though.
I don't think so, not particularly. Yes, Hagler wasn't regularly fighting fifteen rounders, but Leonard wasn't fighting one rounders for three years. His legs were concrete after just 12 rounds. Imagine having to evade Hagler for another three rounds, when Hagler feels the pinch of having to make up for earlier rounds.
I scored it a draw first time I watched it as well... Most recently however I saw them pretty much swap rounds after the first four.
Kind of ironic, if true. MMH hints that he fought at less than his best in some fights to give Leonard the impression that SRL could beat him. SRL saw him and got the idea that he could beat Hagler ... and it turned out the idea was correct.
I wasn't referring to the condition of the fighters and the thought of Leonard going three more rounds. But the fact that it was scheduled for the same as Hagler's previous two fights, so it isn't an issue in my book.
