...in his first pro fight, the way Pete Rademacher did against Floyd Patterson.

Only if it was an aging multiple gold medallist defecting from Cuba, then there would be legitmate interest.

Depends how often he trash talks, if he does a good job and gets some proper attention then yes it's possible.

    Highly unlikely!

Since Rademacher it has happened several times in the lower divisions - but I can't see a repeat at heavyweight.

doubt it....will not be promotional since no one knows this new guy.. promotional company will lose money just paying the fighters alone.

    Absolutely.

If some American came along, dominating in the Summer Olympics, getting the Val Barker trophy, snowballing hype galvanizing the country to actually care to watch the sport and giving it substantial ratings among the Games, and then signed with a big promotional outfit - yeah, I could see them having someone like that debut in a world title bout.

Look at how much they're pushing the likes of Zou Shiming, as 2nd-rate a gold medalist (twice over, but only because of shady judging) as you'll find.

Or the buzz surrounding Lomachenko, Campbell, etc.

Now make it an American? (hell, look at the push a very meager talent in Rau'shee is getting...or Spence...)

...and moreover, a great American hope at heavyweight? :yikes

Yeah, the promoters could very easily finagle a circus act like Patterson vs. Rademacher on us these days.

I think the only chance of this happening is if we get some Usain Bolt type dominance and recognition in the am boxing ranks. A guy that completely destroys his opposition and thus make it some kinda event how well he does against the top dog in the pro ranks.

Otherwise it just becomes just as sad an affair as Shou Shiming headlining a huge show but then ending up an even bigger dissapointment.

    IDK......

If Leon Spinks could get a shot at Ali in his 8th fight, and Vaughn Bean could get not one, but 2 HW title fights vs the supposed great 90s HW titlists without so much as ever beating a journeyman, then I dont see why a decorated Amatuer coming off an illustrious Olympic campaign couldnt get one.:think

    Yes.

If a charismatic American Heavyweight came along and was running through amateur opponents like Mike Tyson did with his early pro foes, the hype would start building immediately. If that dominance continued through the Olympics and a Gold medal, he'd be on the cover of Sports Illustrated and people would be clamouring for him to turn pro. If he was young enough and for whatever reason decided to stay amateur for another Olympics and repeated the trick? Yeah, I don't doubt he could get a shot in his pro debut.

If we're talking a paper title and not the legitimate champ, he wouldn't even have to achieve that much.
