I think you got the wrong idea about the pocket philosophy. It doesn't apply to every situation or person.
I agree with your post and the reason he didn't jump on Calzaghe is because he would have lost a lot of needed stamina if he couldn't take him outta there.. Freddie Roach is no blind idiot ! If he fears for Hopkins in his fight with Pavlik, it's because of stamina !! Yes the B-Hop from the past outhinks and outboxes Pavlik through 12 but now his body can't respond like in the past and Pavlik will make him pay for that !!
Stops him in round 34. Up until round 12 Hopkins was winning a clear decision, but as the fight wore on, his age eventually caught up to him. Its unfortunate, truly is.
Easy to say no, but that would not have been wise at the time, especially if you thought (like I did) that Hopkins would catch joe with those kind of punches all night.
Even when Joe was down he was never hurt. Jumping him would have been the wrong thing to do. If he could have maintained a higher workrate that would have won him the fight.
That's the thing..he can't maintain a high enough workrate anymore.. He started slowing down against Howard Eastman and has been lucky to face people that don't throw way too much per round until he faced Calzaghe. There again, he was lucky that Calzaghe slaps his way to a win and doesn't show power to fear on top of the accumulation of punches..
People are going to be shocked when it happens, but I'm happy to explain why it will right now. Joe Calzaghe looked awful against Hopkins. Not because he's getting old, or that Joe has never been a great fighter, it's because styles make fights ladies and gentleman. Just because Pavlik knocked out Taylor, does not mean he is going to knockout a defensive master, who spoils his opponents every opportunity to land clean. Pavlik has the change to a win decision purely on the fact he should have better stamina being the younger man, but Hopkins would probably survive in a 15 round fight against Wladimir Klitschko. Clearly I'm over exaggerating, but Hopkins is a cute fighter, he'll spoil your work if he has to, he'll wait for opportunities to counter and he doesn't care how long he has to wait, the guy is patient. Pavlik will get countered for 9 rounds and then win the last 3 rounds. Hopkins UD.
Hopkins lacks the speed to keep Pavlik off of him. He'll use defense to protect himself but Pavlik's workrate will get punches through anyway. Hopkins may be sneaky enough to get a some good shots in and maybe even win a few rounds but he lacks the power to really hurt Pavlik. But in the end Hopkins lacks the stanima to keep up with Pavlik's workrate. He'll slow down and Pavlik (sensing weakness) will increase his accuracy and workrate. It'll end badly for Hopkins in round 10.
Pavlik will win a decision, i don't see him stopping the iron chinned Hopkins, to gritty, to tough, i see this fight as more as a chess match than a street brawl.. Pavlik UD in what should be Hopkins last fight..
Summary of what you said: Age doesn't matter, fighters can fight forever. Hopkins would beat Klitschko by decision.
Selfkill...... It must be clear to you that Freddie Roach must be smoking some great dope...Hopkins doesn't have the stamina or the one punch power to keep Pavlik off him for 12 rounds !! Therefore Pavlik will overwhelm him !! DO YOU GUYS FORGET HE'S 43 ?? It's gonna be Cotto -Margarito all over again with Hopkins throwing much less than Cotto did !!
