Gotta be the 20's, and the sport was strong right up to the start of WWII. That's when the decline of boxing started in the US, although more global talent has helped make up for the domestic decline.

Depends which weigh division we are talking..

Heavyweight had two or three... (some would say 4)..

    The Louis and Marciano era..

    The Ali, Frazier, Foreman era..

Some would go further back for one more,, or even call the Tyson years an era despite him not really having any high profile opponents..

    ___________

Then there were the Duran, Hearns, SRL era in a lower division

    ___________

In the SMW division the current time is the golden age for sure. Starting from Calzaghe until now. Never has it been more filled or with better talent. There could be the argument that the Eubank etc period was the second golder era despite the division really not being contested internationally at the time.. and mostly being an internal british weight division.

    _____________

And so forth.. depends on the division..

made a thread on this a couple years back.

It's boxrec, so I made some adjustments (the black dots)

so based on that I'd say 30's-50's. Hype-wise I'd say 70s-80s, the Don King/Arum era

1978-1990 or so. Seriously. Modern scientific training can't replace the coming up the hard way of a Hagler/Hearns/Duran type.

These modern champs are "created" without having to earn it. With Caballero on the p4p lists in the 2010s, it's a joke and shite state of affairs.

i've had this argument plenty of times....it's too hard to say.

in my lifetime....i'd have to go with the 70's-80's. of course i grew up watching fights on network television. those days can't be topped. but if u look at all the big named champions....and the era they existed in....i think the 40's-50's is thee golden era.

    40'-50's
    joe louis
    ray robinson
    rocky marciano
    archie moore
    henry armstrong
    willie pep
    kid gavilan
    rocky graziano
    marcel cerdan
    tony zale
    jake lamotta....

    the list goes on....

80's...The Fab 4 and Mike Tyson...enough said. With the 70's in a close second place. 90's was very big as well.

1970's-1990's the greatest years for the sport.
