A lot more knowledeable than Skip imo. Skip imo is playing a character for money Merchant actually reported.
When Canelo fought Mosley, Merchant said along the lines of.. Canelo might be fighting on Cinco De Mayo but looking at him he should be fighting on St. Patricks day. Canelo has red hair but the rest of his family are Mexican looking Mexicans.
Sorry I do not agree Larry & Teddy Atlas were two guys that told it as it was & didn't care who got offended that's why they got terminated. Teddy called them on the corruption that was happening in the sport so they fired him too. Talking about cowardice & unprofessional look no farther than Mayweather himself. Agreed Ortiz head butted Mayweather, he was tired of the running , holding & elbow shivers which was Mayweathers forte. Cortez rightfully stopped the fight & took a point from Ortiz, but then he screwed up. He NEVER gave the instruction to " Box on" as the law demands. The Cowardly punk Mayweather blatantly cold cocked a helpless & unprotected Ortiz with the best combination he could muster. Watch Cortez face , it was " What the heck do I do now" !!!! What he should have done is DQ'd Floyd but Floyd was the Vegas cash cow & wasn't allowed to lose.So he counted Ortiz out knowing that Vegas boxing would cover him. The only good thing that came out of that debacle was the fact Floyd couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag. If he could punch he could easily have seriously hurt Ortiz or even worse. They couldn't talk their way out of it then Some TBE huh????
I liked Merchant's interview with Lennox Lewis after the Vitali Klitchsko fight. Merchant was just trying to get a decent interview about what a terrific fight it was and as usual, Lewis only wanted to talk about himself. So while Merchant is trying to get him to say something nice about the fight that Vitali just put up, Lewis was getting more and more agitated with the questions. I can't recall now what Lewis said but he was really PO'd and called out Merchant for it and Merchant said something like, "Look, it takes two to make a fight and you just don't appear to want to say anything about the fight he just put up." Or something to that effect. I actually liked it because clearly Lewis was twice Merchant's size and Larry just kept nibbling away.
Larry was trying to direct the whole narrative, he didn't give Lewis any credit for the win, and then kept trying to imply that Lewis took Vitali lightly (such a weird accusation seeing as how Lewis had been training to fight Kirk Johnson). If he had just come out and said "great fight champ, can you give us your assessment?" or something of that effect, that would be perfectly understandable, but like always, he goes out there, tries to pitch a narrative, and then tries to pin the interviewee to his talking points . At that point he should just stick to giving monologues. It's obvious he doesn't really care what the fighter has to say, he just want him to go along with his talking points.
Floyd didn’t break any rules. Ortiz blatantly, intentionally head-butted him. Then he wanted to hug and kiss and make up. And then he wanted to hug again. Cortez said ‘let’s go’ and motioned them together. And he wanted yet another hug. Get that annoying punk out of there. Floyd did what he should have done.
That's the whole problem Watch the fight again Cortez NEVER says "Box on"nor does he even signal it. Do you think for one minute that had the roles been reversed that Ortiz would have got a KO win ??? C'mon get real. One thing. that fight shows exactly what a cowardly punk Floyd was. But there again he didn't mind hitting his babies Momma did he TBE ????? Biggest fraud in boxing history
I wasn’t much of a fan. He clearly had no understanding of boxing. He displayed a certain arrogance around the fighters, almost bordering on contempt. It was almost as if he thought people were actually tuning in to listen to his Ivy League banter rather than to see a fight.
I don't know, James, Merchant is very subdued throughout this interview. Clearly it's Lewis who is agitated. I'm posting the interview but I will say this seems to be a truncated version. Also, an interviewer should never say to Lennox Lewis, "Great fight champ, can you give us your assessment?" Because if you do, Lewis will only talk about himself and his greatness. He has to be directed in order to get any kind of sensible interview. Anyways, for the heck of it. Here it is. This content is protected
Geez not going to debate this but he says ‘let’s go.’ And for the THIRD TIME, Ortiz wants to hug. He’s already hugged him twice, kissed him (literally), touched gloves a couple of times … and now we’re supposed to wait until he’s all hugged out? The ref said ‘let’s go.’ Stop hugging. Protect yourself at all times. What kind of cowardly punk is Ortiz to willfully, deliberately ram with his head … this wasn’t a guy coming in aggressively whose head happened to thunk the other guy’s — he used it as a weapon as if it were a WWE match (except for real). Screw that guy.
Two quotes following Mike Tyson's KO over Tony Tubbs: "If you thought that whale hunting was outlawed in Japan, we just saw that Mike Tyson hadn't heard about it" "So, Tubbs winds up as a bug, a fat bug on the windshield of Mike Tyson's career"
I'm kind of torn because it takes quite a bit of arrogance to critique people who fight for a living when you've never so much as sparred...however he did make me laugh a few times and we've all seen how dull most ex fighters are as commentators.
