I also don’t agree with the idea that ‘to broadcast a fight/football game/soccer match you have to have boxed/played football/soccer.’ That’s stupid. It’s like saying only former presidents and congressmen should be able to talk about politics. Being a good broadcaster (whether you think Merchant was one or not … his background was newspapers as a columnist) is a separate skill. I mean, most people on this thread (if not all) have zero background in broadcasting so does that mean they shouldn’t express opinions on Merchant and other broadcasters?
Now lets get this straight. I never said Larry was right all the time. Like everyone else he has an opinion & he always voiced that opinion Tell me Do you think Max Kellerman knows his boxing??? He has no boxing experience his Daddies $$$$$ got him jobs . My take on this discussion regarding Mayweather? I believe he acted like a street punk, cold cocking a defenceless unprotected opponent. What a real fighter would do is make sure he paid his opponent back for that head butt LEGALLY like a real man would I still think the way Larry shut Mayweathers big mouth was a real classic
I think Floyd did the absolute right thing. If I were a trainer and someone deliberately fouls my guy, then the instruction from me would be "If he fouls you again, do it back twice as hard" Ortiz got exactly what he deserved, it's a rough game. In fact, Mayweather did him a favor with the KO, because it would have been a sustained battering for the rest of the fight anyway. As far as Larry Merchant goes - I always liked him, although I wouldn't say he's the most knowledgeable boxing commentator of all time. He was interesting, polished, professional and conducted himself in front of a camera far better than anyone around today. He was also pretty funny when he was hammered. I'm trying to think of when Merchant was at his drunkest during a broadcast, lol. The Keith Mullings - Terry Norris fight pops into my mind for some reason, I'll have to rewatch haha.
A gloved opponent in front of him who had been told ‘let’s go’ by the referee who waved them together to resume was ‘defenceless and unprotected’? Why? Because he wanted to hug and kiss some more? How long should he get for a hug-it-out timeout? Another 10 minutes … 20 even? Just wait til the guy who did the fouling decides he’s ‘ready’ lol? SMFH.
But Cortez NEVER said lets go he was looking at the corner NOT at the fighters. That guy should have had the boot years ago. Like inFloyd -Hatton fight Ricky complained about Floyd ducking below his waist . A FOUL. Cortez just said " Then don't hit him while he's down there Ricky or I'll take a point "
I gave you the video. You don’t even have to turn up the volume to hear it. And he waves his hands together while he does it. You seem to think a referee’s body language/facial expression overrides his actual instructions. The guy fouled the hell out of Floyd and when the action resumed Floyd gave him a receipt. That’s all there is to it. The dirty pool was the head butt. And the incessant kissing and hugging that he wanted to go on endlessly. You still haven’t addressed that.
Sorry but you'll never get me to accept Floyd as anything but a cowardly street punk. My only regret is my friend Antonio Margarito never got to give Floyd what he truly deserved .. A Cotto like butt whipping. I liked when Floyd said " Whos Margarito who is he I don't know" ROFL Floyd showed he knew who he was when he saw Tony standing in front of him He was literally terrified blabbering like Daffy Duck Ive no doubt you've seen the videos . Some TBE ROFL
Right. As I keep pointing out, you’ve made up your mind about Floyd to the point that you can’t see in a particular situation that he did exactly what a fighter is supposed to do … it’s the other guy who (a) caused the problem with a deliberate head butt, (b) kept wanting to hug and kiss (literally) rather than just touching gloves and preparing to fight, or that (c) the referee very clearly says ‘let’s go’ and waves them together. But it doesn’t matter what happened because you hate Mayweather. I don’t see any point in going any further. We can agree to disagree my friend.
That one pissed me off. Wasn't Hakker a mandatory? What was BHOP supposed to do but fight his mandatory? (apologies if I'm thinking of a difference incident)
Watch the fight again & watch Floyd's punch steer Hatton into the corner pad as he was rushing in. Ricky's head hits the pad & you see his neck react !! The corner pad KO'd Hatton not Floyd.
Technically yes but only a cowardly punk that couldn't break an egg would pull a stunt like that. Even then, with Floyds hardest combination, Ortiz was up & laughing in no time. Cortez face was a picture "what the **** do I do now" Lol looking to the corner for help. Hitting a completely vulnerable unprotected opponent like that its a good job for Floyd he couldn't punch or he could have seriously hurt Ortiz or even worse Typical cowards move
