What are some fights that are literally death defyingly brave outages by a fighter while being in a condition? What first comes to mind is Paulie Malignaggi in one fight he didn't even remember what happened a few rounds, he literally fought, then forgot some rounds he was ultimately Brain dead for a few minutes or two. And then there s Mosley who forgot rounds against Pacquiao after the KD while fighting off of brain damaging fighting reluctantly. I know Hopkins said he felt like he was in an elevator that got clipped and fell and hit the floor, but I know he loves to exaggerate injuries lol. I can't remember which fight. Then there's Evander Holyfield. Half way through the fight he felt like he was swimming exactly halfway between the main land and an island, but he didn't think he had enough to get back or else make it to the island! Sheesh. Does anyone remember this fight? It was a 15 rounder. Then there's an old amateur boxing story: some dude was reading the pamphlet/ nights schedule of fights, and he read his name on it. He was like wtf? Where am I? He did the math and found out he was knocked out and concussed in his am fight. Pretty scarey stuff. I've even heard of boxers completely forgetting the post fight interview! I think that was the aforementioned fight by Paulie Malignaggi I wish my memory serves me correct. Perhaps many of you classic pundits can think of other instances from other fights/ eras where the fighter relied on autopilot, it's a miracle to god they made it!
Henry Armstrong said that he once swallowed so much blood that he passed out after a fight …when he woke up he thought he’d been knocked out …but his corner told him “ No you won” … I can’t remember if it was Barney Ross or Lou Ambers
I remember a ring magazine article where they compared pacman to ol' henry. Saying Pacquiao is the modern day henry Armstrong arguably pound for pound 4 on all time lists.
Another blood guzzler was Jon Ryder. His nose was bleeding hours after he had it broken, by Canelo, waloping tons of blood.
Armstrong: He too fought with a condition: an abnormally low heart beat, he had to hit pads for ten rounds or shadow box just to get his body warmed up for a 15 tound fight!
Larry Holmes says he remembers being knocked down by Shavers, but cannot remember the two rounds after. He said he asked his corner what round it was, and when he was told round 10, he asked "what happened to 8 and 9?" The response was "Earnie." I assume in cases like this, the concussion prevents the memories from being formed, although in the moment the fighters did know what was going on. I have a personal story about ambien along these lines. Was visiting my mother, took an ambien for sleep, and she found me in the kitchen at 3am opening and eating cans of tuna. I have zero memory of this, but I was clearly conscious of what I was doing in the moment. (and I guess good job on ambien-me for choosing something healthy for a late night binge?)
Lyle vs Foreman round 4.... Both fighters where on autopilot here during various portions of the round with foreman being floored twice... and still managed to get up off the canvas and continue to a 5 round KO.
Marlon Starling's post fight interview (paraphrasing) after being KO'd after the bell by Tomas Molinares: Marlon Starling: "I have no idea why this fight was stopped!" Larry Merchant: "Well, Marlon, you were knocked out." Starling: "Knocked out?! I wasn't even down!" Merchant: "Marlon.....I think you need to see a replay."
That happened with Buddy McGirt. He was floored by a left hook to the top of his head by Tony Baltazar in the second round. He got up and boxed beautifully for the rest of the fight, getting the 10 round decision. He says he remembers absolutely none of it after the knockdown.
Hats off to Ryder for sticking in there and proving his willingness to go out on his shield. Even in the face of defeat Ryder did not quit and went the distance with Canelo which can be interpreted as a victory for Ryder to a certain extent.
