You'd have to include pre200lb versions of Ali, Jack Johnson, Walcott and Louis

The the career sub-200lbs - Tunney, Patterson, Quarry, Dempsey, Langford, Moore, Charles, Marciano, M Spinks

Then modern crusers - Toney, Holyfield, Haye

I shudder to think what Dempsey, Marciano and Langford would do to todays Cruserweight division.

I suspect that a lot of fighters who were under 200 lbs in the days of yore would come in at over 200 today due to diferences in training methods.

Its probably a better assumption to say that if most of todays fighters
dropped the juice, and really got in shape they would be under 200lbs.

I agree, a lot of these guys were big boned guys and if you look at Marciano 6 months after he retired, he was thick from not running 10 miles a day, there is a video next to Floyd Patterson and Marciano's arms were wider than Floyds body. If he bulked up the way Evander did with weight training it would be easy for him to put on 20 - 40 lbs of muscle and it would show up in the arms and chest and shoulders,Marciano already had huge legs. The only thing he may have to cut down his 10-15 mile run a day, Dempsey was cut and could also put on a weight gain like Tyson and Evander did with weights

Dempsey certainly isnt as naturally as muscular as Tyson. Holyfield did bulk up from 190 to 205 then eventually 210-215.

Holyfield used quite allot of roids/supplements/weights and Dempsey would do the same, it would rob him of some fluidity/stamina for the extra size and he would be a manufactured heavy much like Holy was and he wouldnt be quite the puncher against bigger guys that you may think he would be. The same with Marciano

Dempsey weighed around the 200 lb mark when he took fights on short notice so I think he could be 200 today even without bulking up.

What an all time list this would have made had there always been a cruiser division. Probably the best ATG list of any.

    Marciano
    Dempsey
    Langford
    Quarry
    Tunney
    Patterson
    Spinks
    Ellis
    Johansson
    Foster
    Jirov
    Charles
    Machen
    Moore
    Frazier
    Holyfield
    Byrd
    Toney
    Moorer
    Qawi

Whilst Dempsey had slim legs his biceps were 16 inches the same as Liston's,not a small guy really.

Dempsey had no trouble at all starching heavyweights in the 220-240 range. He hit that hard, and his range ( 77” reach ) and speed were too much for the big men in his era. I recommend watching Dempsey spar with Bill Tate.

If Dempsey ate right, I think he could weigh 10 pounds more without losing any fluidity.

The smaller heavies who did not have good chins, reach, height, or power would be in trouble in the modern heavyweight division, but Dempsey was not at a major disadvantage in these departments.

I BEG TO DIFFER,POWER IS A NATURAL THING AND IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF FIGHTER THAT PUTS YOUR WEIGHT INTO A PUNCH LIKE DEMPSEY AND MARCIANO,THEN YOUR POWER WILL INCREASE WITH WEIGHT GAIN AS LONG IT IS NOT AT THE EXPENCE OF STAMINA LOSS. IN THE LOWER WEIGHT CLASSES SUCH AS HATTON,DELAHOYA, WEIGHT GAIN DID NOT COME ON NATURALLY BUT WAS ONLY EXCESS BAGGAGE IN THE FORM OF FAT. DURAN REALLY DID NOT HAVE THE FRAME BUT HIS GREATNESS ALLOWED A NATURAL 135LB GREAT TO HOLD HIS OWN WITH ONE OF THE BEST @ 160 (PRIME HAGLER) AND 168 BARKLEY
