An oft overlooked fighter with a rock jaw was Pierre Fourie of South Africa. I don't believe he was ever knocked off his pins until his last fight where, at the age of 34, decided to give heavyweight a try and that was against the bionic right of Gerrie Coetzee, who had him by almost 25 pounds. But in his prime at 175 he went 30 rounds with Bob Foster and 30 rounds with Victor Galindez without tasting resin.
Most guys mentioned had great chins but also some semblance of defense. A guy (who although knocked down and stopped once) who had virtually no defense but got by, by virtue of their granite jaw was Jeff "Hitman" Harding. His ability to soak up punishment and keep pressing forward was incredible. He might be behind some others in regards to pure chin but not very many.
@McGrain what names from the additional suggestions would you be comfortable adding to your initial post?
Mercer hard as nails.Eubank took Benns bombs straight on the chops .no middle in history takes him out . Mason concrete chin .
Freddie Steele was only stopped at the very very end of close to a 150 fight pro career. Monzon was never stopped as far as I know?
But he was knocked down and hurt many times. His recuperative powers and heart saved him more than once. Good chin but not impenetrable.
I guess it depends how u look at it. I'm looking at it from the recovery standpoint so I'm probably reading the question wrong lol
He was a pretty small heavyweight too in comparison to some of the guys he faced. Amazing durability.
Ali was floored against Henry Cooper and had it happened in the middle of the round, who knows. Holyfield was badly hurt by Bert Cooper and only the ropes saved him from going down. Also stopped by Bowe in his prime. If you're only looking for 'the best of the best' chins I think those 2, as sturdy as they were, have to be precluded.
It's a fine fine line which is why i am pushing Mac for a line in the sand. I didn't mention Ali myself as i was a teeny bit unsure. Cooper was pre title and Ali from Liston thru to his decline fought some of the most dangerous bangers ever and never came close to being stopped. I'd say he was about as unstoppable as a heavyweight could be at his best. He was dropped by Frazier and hurt as well tho. Given his proven resume against monsters he might be worthy. Monzon was badly hurt by Briscoe which was why i never mentioned him. The knockdowns as a fledgling and flash KD against Valdes don't count against him for mine but the Briscoe blemish certainly puts him behind a Hagler. Holmes was knocked down and hurt numerous times so is absent too. One of the greats could well finish him off. Holyfield has a great chin but was stopped at his peak. Mac, draw your line in the sand!!!
