I don't think you can post photos here, so I'll just type it below. What you are about to see is an astonishing record from Battling's school days that tells you everything you need to know about Johnson, a man mountain with feet of quicksilver: his school sports days results from 1900: Junior Boys: Championship. First 100m B. Jim Johnson 100m hurdles B. Jim Johnson 200m B. Jim Johnson 400m. B. Jim Johnson 800m J. Steedman 1500m. J. Steedman Discus. B. Jim Johnson Shot. B. Jim Johnson Javelin. B. Jim Johnson Baseball. S. Bradley Long Jump. B. Jim Johnson High Jump. B. Jim Johnson Triple Jump. B. Jim Johnson 4 X 100m relay. Simmonds (Battling Jim might have been in the relay team?)
Wow, pretty impressive. Did they call him "Battling" at school too? I could almost believe that he might become as legendary as Dustin Nichols.
I think that we have to consider him a slightly under rated heavyweight in hindsight. A Carlos Takem of the era perhaps.
Do we know how many kids attended his school? If there were only four this looks a lot less impressive.
In alphabetical order, his classmates were: Battling Herbert Connell Battling Larry Jackson Battling Marie Simms Battling Susan Wilberforce Battling Michael Wilson Some believe that Mysterious Billy Pickles may have attended the school, but he wouldn't have showed up in the class photograph, so it's hard to tell.
