Totally agree. He could fight ALOT. And he KNOCKED out I thinkthe top Cuban which didn't happen too often.
He was fearless with a good punch at his best.
    It's a shame he couldn't control himself.
He also boxed for the Marines I believe which is also an impressive accomplishment.
    Olympic Champion
    Heavyweight Champion

    Thats pretty impressive.

Those who really think Spinks was "great" probably think that the canvas was wet or slippery when he fought Coetzee.

I've found that what qualifies as "great" has been progressively watered down as time has gone on.

When I was growing up reading boxing mags in the 70s and 80s, it was taken for granted that Primo Carnera was mediocre. Today, it's actually debated!!!

Now, Leon Spinks, who was also clearly understood to a mediocrity that basically got lucky to beat an old Ali who overlooked him is "great?"

Wow! "Greatness" clearly isn't what it used to be.

No sir it surely isn't...everything, including logical thinking, has fallen by the wayside since the 70's.

What people are trying to say is he had the TALENT to be so much more based on his past accomplishments- Boxed on Marine team,Olympic GOLD against the Russians and Cuban fighters and finally he upset Ali in his EIGHTH fight I believe.
So that all wasn't luck- you have to have talent especially back then to make the Olympic team let alone win gold.
And of course Ali was no longer at his best but he still beat him after only a handful of fights.
Its like saying to David Reid you weren't good even though you boxed in the Olympics and you were a World Champion.
What more can a fighter honestly accomplish being an Olympic Champion and the Heavyweight champion? Thats being pretty talented in my book.
