I'm no modern era hater by a long shot, but there's no question there's too few contender on contender bouts. After a few decent weeks of HW action, if you look to boxrec right now, besides Wlad, who always fights top contenders, there is exactly ONE bout scheduled between top 50 HW's. That's Cunningham Tarver, where both participants earned most of their fame at lower weight classes. That's really inexcusable when you think about it.
The only concern of top HWs is to find an easy way to a title shot. Maybe that's the downside of domination.
Just look at Pulev. He got KOd by Wlad in November. If he had any sort of ***** he'd have one comeback fight behind him and one scheduled already. But what is he doing? Nothing. They're all waiting for Wlad to retire and I hope Wlad isn't going to do them this favor.
Exactly, would have loved to see Pulev v Stiverne or Chisora, (two more fighters who haven't done anything since a long ago defeat). It's a shame we'll never know how these types of fights would have gone. I will admit those type of contenders faced each other more often back in the 70's and 80's. Hopefully Wlad will fight for 4 more years, set all the records, and retire after the above fighters have already hung them up.
Poor promotion, lack of interest in the biggest problem, not the lack of talent.... There's a plethora of HW talent with no major promotional backing.
Too many guys afraid to lose (not the fighters but their promoters) Let's see who Jennings fights in the fall. Jennings vs Teper would be good imo. Stiverne vs Pulev would be good as well.
I can see Pulev vrs Teper happening before the end of the year. Povetkin is a contender fighting top guys, but at this point he's practically a minor champ and fighting him is a minor title shot. There are a few recent heavyweight contenders who have earned their shot the right way by facing other prospects, notably Jennings and Pulev. Ultimately the issue is Wlad's dominance. He ducks nobody, which means that everybody in the division eventually gets exposed by Wlad or Sascha.
A few simple reasons for this: A) Povetkin, the number two guy, has earned a shot at the WBA belt and will be sitting on that rather than fighting. B) Wilder, arguably the number three, hasn't scheduled a fight yet but will shortly. C) Wlad and Fury, number 1 and 4, are scheduled to fight each other. D) A lot of other top guys are damaged good. Stiverne just lost to Wilder, Pulev and Jennings just lost to Wlad, Perez and Takam whacked out by Povetkin, etc. Really, if you look at it, the only guy who should be doing more is Glazkov, who, lets be honest, is terrified of getting rolled because he is not that good.
Re****ed thread. Within the last two years HW has been pretty much the only division where the contenders have been facing each other regularly.
The problem is people can get title shots without having any risky fights. So, there's probably 5 or 6 HW fighters in the world who believe they are just a fight away from a title shot, and looking for an easy fight. There's probably another 4 or 5 who don't have the right connections but the first group has no incentive to fight them, so they might end up fighting each other in high risk road-to-nowhere fights. Beyond that there's just nameless bums.
A few wishes for the division I have are this. 1. Several vanquished contenders should start fighting each other to see earns another shot- Pulev, Jennings, Stiverne. - this would separate contender from pretender relatively quickly. 2. Wilder should just fight Povetkin already. He is the not only the mando but the second best fighter in the division and the second best payday. Why waste fans times with Eric Molina and whoever Al Haymon wants to dig up for sept 26th (Arreola, Szpilka). It's a waste of fans time. 3. Start getting tv time for some exciting new prospects Parker, Joshua, Charles Martin, alexander usyk ( I know he is cruiser but talented and plans to go hw) 4. Helenius step up his rehab and get back into the too ten. Wlad has been doing his part. Time for others to do same. If I could only get one wish of the 4 I would choose 1 or 3.
The matches we've been getting since Vitali retired is the prove excitement will be back once Wlad retires. We had Arreola-Stiverne, Jennings-Perez, Wilder-Stiverne, Povetkin-Perez, Povetkin-Takam for WBC title bouts/eliminations. Contenders just want K bros out of picture to prove themselves.
Were I a promoter with all the money in the world, you would be seeing: Winner of Klitschko/Fury (Klitschko) -Wilder Povetkin- Winner of Klitschko/Wilder (Klitschko) Helenius-Chisora II Joshua-Whyte Gerber-Wallish Chagaev-Ortiz Glazkov-Fedosov Teper-Pulev Jennings-Charles Martin Dinu-Dimentrenko Wallin-Saglam Chambers-winner of Tarver/Cunningham Hugh Fury- Ian Lewinson Rudenko-Brown II Parker-Meehan And, in a special encore fight I would throw a lot of money to make... Sultan Ibragimov-Sam Peter
And that's not how boxing works (or should work). Young contenders should get in the ring, knock out the old king, take the crown and become new king. That's how it should work. If the contenders don't have the cojones then they don't belong in the sport.
