This is sort of obscure, but I'm looking for some information on heavyweight boxer Sylvester Jones http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9966&cat=boxer The reason I ask is because I think I may be related to him, lol. I was looking at boxrec tonight and had one of those "holy crap" moments when I saw his name, and saw where he was born "Bronx, N.Y." Which is where my relative was born. I was hoping I could find his birthday or a picture. My google searching hasn't brought up anything. Either way, thank you guys for checking it out, any help is appreciated.
all I know is that jones was the "tryout" opponent for cleveland williams big newyork debut at the polo grounds on the undercard of marciano v lastarza. The idea being that a bright new heavyweight star with an impresive win might emerge as a posible chalenger for the title. cleveland was still very young but already had a run of impresive wins in texas and his handlers obviously felt the timing was right to launch him into the bigtime but jones did not read the script and gave big cat his first real beating. This must of been jones's career highlight, winning in the same ring as marciano clobbered lastarza.
Yes, I saw this, and I saw the rematch was in Tampa, FL. This is the only bit of info that is throwing me off to thinking it was/is "him." But, I can see a situation where they ask Jones to come to Tampa for a rematch and pay his way. From what I understand about my family history there is no way a Jones from our time could have paid their own way down there. But, it makes sense if a promoter gave him the cash so they can have a rematch in which Williams could look good beating someone who beat him (which he did, knocking him out in 7) However, the rest of his fights being between MA, and NY fit the bill. I've emailed some members of my family, but I'm not even sure they would know, as they were all very young, or not even born yet. If I could some how find a picture, that would be amazing, because I have seen pictures of the "Sylvester Jones," that I was related too. Either way, thank you for the bit of history, even if it isn't him.
This is pretty silly, but even some information on if he was African-American or White would help...it would obviously help me determine if there is a chance I'm related, or not...lol...that is probably the most obvious thing I ever said.
He gave a young cleveland williams two very difficult fights. Knocked Williams down 4 times in the first fight, and the bout was stopped after 4 rounds to permit Lastarza-Marciano title fight. Slyvester was given the win, but papers indicated williams was going to be knocked out. In the rematch, Williams caught up to Jones and knocked him out, but according to the newspaper Jones was ahead on points after 6 rounds.
Thank you very much for doing this. I also did this and looked for a newspaper account, and only found his name a couple times, but no thorough description of him. But again, thanks for taking your time to do this.
These were the newspaper accounts I found. I love the part where the first Williams fight was cut down (presumably in the middle of the fight?) to make way for the Marciano-Lastarza fight.
