If Joe had, indeed, fought the Turkey, people would have flocked to the arena to see it. Tickets would fly off the shelves, as you know both would have been in beak condition.

Joe would have had a precise game plan, but I think Turkey would have just winged it.

Turkey isn’t discussed enough here neither is Ray, Sheppard, or Murray. The problem is no film of these contenders which is odd considering there is more film of 30s hw contenders then 40s. Seemed like a Bonavena copy judging from the description

Out of all the puns I've seen before on this forum, these are the most fowl.

I think Louis would take the Turkey's best punches w/o even finching, then knock him cuckoo w/ eagle-eyed precision.

It all depends on wren it happened.

I think there’s a sparrow window where the Turkey might just gull Louis to sleep, peckering away with his jab and then swoop in and thrasher Joe with a savage flurry to force a stoppage.

People would grouse about the ending, but it would be too late.

All right, we’ve had enough gobbling and pecking about birds. It’s time to talk Turkey.

I did some research and found this oddity: In a career lasting from 1938 to 1952, Turkey Thompson pretty much flew the coop every November. Only in 1938, ‘39, ‘42 and ‘49 did he have bouts in the 11th month of the year.

And of those, he never, ever fought on Thanksgiving. The closest was his last November outing, which took place six days before the holiday, when he beat the stuffing out some pilgrim named Al Hart in ‘49. Not to fat shame anyone, but Hart came in as round as a pumpkin at 221 3/4 while the Turkey was a reasonable 207.

His two 1930s outings in November were early or middle of the month, giving him plenty of time to prepare for a Thanksgiving feast. In 1942, he fought nine days before.

Let the record show, however, that Turkey didn’t flap his wings every holiday season. No, far from it. In 1939, he carved up Big Boy Hogue in a few quick rounds on Dec. 26, the day after Christmas. It may sound corny, but word is that Turkey pushed away the holiday cookies and candy canes and merely consumed a few giblets.

But wait, there’s more. The Turkey did have one more holiday adventure in his storied career.

On March 17, 1941 — St. Patrick’s Day — “Irish” Turkey Thompson lost a 10-round decision to Bob Pastor. Thompson swung his mighty right hand like a meaty turkey leg from the opening bell (some likened it to a shillelagh) and knocked down Pastor six times in the first round.

But Bob was far from green. The old vet got his Irish up and fought back, knocking down the Turkey in a pile of feathers three times before it ended, won seven rounds (with one even) and had his hand raised at the end.

Never saw any footage of him ( and haven’t really looked much. ) but the guy had a good record and beat some decent fighters for sure

Apparently it was said some of his performances were akin to poultry in motion.

It’s a question of which came first: the turkey or the egg.

Either he got banned for his birdist posts or maybe he was crowing about something that got the mods’ attention.

Probably nesting up with a nice feather pillow mocking us all.
