Fitzsimmons would be more likley to draw Johansen into the fatal trap than vice versa.

Once Fitz realises that Johansen is essentialy a one trick pony the odds shift strongly in his favour.

Fitz had really no defence, so Ingo will smack him on the jaw, and that will be it. It could happen early like the Machen fight.

I'd rather not see Johansson die, seemed like a solid guy to me.

As a sidenote, I do think that Patterson would zap Fitz early and brutally.

Agree. I personally think those head-body combinations might overwhelm him. And goddamn he's just too fast. Patterson KO5 Fitzsimmons.

That, plus the crouch that had always given Fitz trouble, plus the fact that Bob was a somewhat elderly counterpuncher who relied on his cunning to set traps, which Patterson proved he could blast through against Moore.

Oh, and the left hook. Fitzsimmons hadn't dealt with a fully developed, short, modern left hook like Patterson's. Jeff's might have been good, but it didn't have Patterson's speed and conciseness.

Compared to Johansen, Fitz was a defensive genius.

Before I make a prediction, i have to ask the forum 'with fitz keeping his hands by his waist, how is he going to possibly block toonder and lightning?'

    He isn't.

He is going to lure Johansen into throwing it, make him miss by inches, and then throw his own counter.

We are looking at the difference between a fighter who lacked defensive fundamentals (Johansen) and one who simply worked to verry slim margins of error (Fitzsimmons).

    Glad you asked.

Fighters in Fitz's era compensated for low hands with greater distance and more reliance upon feints, which gave them a greater margin of error. Of all of the punches thrown in the 19th century, the straight right hand has changed the least, so if Fitz could block it in his own era, he could block a modern version. With small enough gloves, he could also slip it more easily (as he did in his own time).

As to the mechanics, I'd guess that he would block Ingo's Bingo in the same way that he blocked straight rights from his own time: with the outside ridge of the arm, like a karate block but pushing the punch outward rather than up. It left the body somewhat open to the left hook, but Ingo doesn't really have one.
