It would be interesting to see the rubber match without the mandatory eight count. I think it was the first HW title fight it was used. Ingo had Floyd down twice in the first round. Ingo always said with the same rules as before he would have taken Floyd out in that round.
Everything was noted. You framed it as a rhetorical question with an assumption. At any rate, any confusions have been duly allayed.
I think it's as simple as people being more impressed by a flat footed slugger like Williams who will stand in front of his opponent and throw bombs than a mover like Ingo who pretends to be harmless and lures his opponent into the hammer of Thor. The more you think about it, the more impressive you realize that his accuracy was. First right against Machen connects and over. First (or was it second) against Floyd and the fight is basically over. Against Floyd he did nothing until the third round. He deceived both Patterson and Machen and probably a lot of boxing fans too.
How many times did Ingo hit Machen before it was "over"? How many times did he hit Patterson before it was "over"?
I'm starting to think Ingemar was a cross between Willie Pep, SRR and Deontay Wilder.......but more dangerous.
I can’t believe the contortions people are going through trying to prop up someone who IMO was basically a footnote in the history of the world heavyweight boxing championship.
Once a guy was bingoed with the hammer of Thor it’s over. Survival is futile. Anything that comes after that is purely incidental. And the responsibility of Brave referees.
Well, after he bingoed her, Liz Taylor could never walk quite the seem ever again - and there was no ref there to save poor Liz either.
This is actually more accurate for those trying to make Liston seem unbeatable. I haven't seen an arguments actually rebutting those things said about Ingo's right and that it landed with the highest accuracy. Seems like you have run out of arguments now that you're posting in this fashion. What's most exaggerated in this thread is probably the chin of Sonny Liston. Because he beat Williams he now has the most legendary chin. Fact is that Williams didn't land his best shot. I've asked for the video evidence in here and the fights are on youtube. All of the punches were telegraphed. It's often the punch you don't see coming that hurts you. Like Ali against Liston. Clearly Liston did not have the most fantastic chin based on that. But please prove me wrong.
