Ingo belongs with Primo Carnera and James Braddock as the three poorest fighters to ever hold the heavyweight title. He had no chin, poor stamina, was easy to hit, basically nothing more than a right hand. In addition he was not even a warrior. He had little stomach for the sport. His victory over Machen was a fluke if I ever saw one ... if they fought another nine times Eddie wins all ... he caught a very limited, sheltered Patterson, who had been dropped and out boxed for the first three rounds of a recent previous bout against amateur Pete Rademacher and had fought no one other than an old post Marciano Moore. Floyd went on to improve as a fighter after the bout to some degree but Ingo, please.

How much on Johansson have you seen? I've seen about every filmed fight of his, considering he's the only heavyweight champ from around these parts.

He utilized a lot of footwork. I'm not saying he was Muhammad Ali but moving around the ring while flicking the jab was his style.

I've seen enough to know how poorly he performed against a focused Patterson and how he folded against Patterson in the rubber match ... again, the Machen fight was a fluke ... yes he could go through the motion against third rate European fighters but on a world class level, come on ... He could not lay a glove on a near amateur 20 year old Cassius Clay ...

 

This doesn't erase the fact that Johansson knocked Patterson out in their first fight. The man could punch as his "flukes" would indicate. The videos also indicate that he did indeed utilize footwork.

What's with sparring sessions being treated as actual fights? First you hear about Johnson-Gunboat Smith, now this. Obviously Ali was a very talented young man then who could make a lot of people look bad in sparring and in actual fights.

 

Lyle beats him up and stops him before the sixth imo.

 

When Johansson knocked out Henry Cooper, the bleeding Brit complained that Johansson had manoeuvred him in the outdoor sun so that he was blinded.
So if the fight is indoors Lyle would only have to worry about Ingo's Bingo.
Lyle was a monster but lost to Jerry Quarry quite convincingly and like a lot of 70's heavies is maybe a bit overrated, by me as much as anybody.
On the other hand Johansson's best wins were against Machen and Patterson but he got starched by Patterson twice and flattened by Brian London who proved he was tougher than Johansson's sister after all
