Ingo is white so of course he would pick that white fighter. A dead Sonny Liston would still knock out Marciano in 1 round.

 

I stopped reading it when Ingo was using Machen to make his points. Machen was a defensive counter puncher with speed. Marciano was not very defensive, or a counter puncher.

Yes Liston didn't like being hit flush, but they way Machen did is is something Marciano would never do,

Furthermore, Rocky could only fight going forward which is where Liston wants its.

 

Rocky was a counter attack presure fighter. Unconventional, awkward but still a counter puncher. He drew leads before letting go.

Liston wants an upright guy to come at him in straight lines who will box at arms distance away - not necessarily a low swaying, smothering up close kind of guy neutralizing his leverage. Liston needed punching room to work.

 

To guarantee a one round knock out Liston needed to land first and to get full leverage into an upright opponent standing arms distance away. As well as qualifying for all that the opponent should also have been knocked out or to have lost one or more of his last few fights or to be as lacking in focus as Floyd Patterson before guaranteeing one round KOs. Don't you think Sonny needs more one round knock outs over great fighters before he can be a certainty to KO another great fighter in one round?Liston only knocked out one guy who was world class in the first round and he did not beat that many elite fighters. Patterson, machen, foley. That's it.

 

Liston would crush Rocky. Rocky fought bums and old people his whole career. And he still struggled against old people like Archie and Jersey Joe. And Sonny's jab is going to smash Rocky's face in all day long.

Great article, thanks for posting. I never knew Marty Marshall was always taking short-notice fights and worked full time at a paint company to support his 9 kids. Makes you wonder what he could've done had he been able to focus on boxing 100%.
