Though it seems pretty simple, Ingemar Johannson knocks out Eddie Machen. First round knock-out, as Ingo lets go with his right hand 'toonda'. Knocks down Eddie twice, and then brutally pounds him unmercifully, while an incompetent referee Andrew Smyth ignores a helpless Machen sitting near unconcious on the bottom strand rope. But, why was Eddie Machen there, risking his top ranking against a strong and powerful, but untested Swede. Jeopardizing a potential title fight with Floyd Patterson. I found an old article in S.I. Magazine. Eddie was 24-0-1 and was willing to go to Sweden to fight Johansson. But Eddie and his manager had a clause written into the contract. That under no circumstances, could Johansson take a fight with Floyd Patterson in the United States before Eddie.......... Of course, Ingo got a fight first?
This is what Ingo writes about the fight in his book: At first the Machen camp wanted a rematch clause in the contract, but Ingo was against it and sent a contract to Machen without a rematch clause, and got it back signed by Machens manager. The machen camp was sure about victory, but after seeing Ingo training they suddenly wanted a contract for a rematch in case Machen lost. They cornered Ingos manager the day before the fight and said that they were leaving at once if they did not get a rematch contract. Ingo´s manager had to sign a cortract on the hotels stationary. After ko1 result, there ware never any real reason for them to meet again. Woller
