The black guy is Jimmy Glenn boxing trainer and bar owner[HowardDavis etc] the drunk overweight whitey next to him is McVey. The photo was taken in Jimmy's Corner Bar West 44th St about 3 am ,2 years ago. It's a great boxing joint with loads of posters etc in it. I was in NY for the Frampton v Santa Cruz fight at the Barclays Centre.
He would be an undefeated European champion. There would be no proof that he stacked up with the best. But no proof that he couldn't. Sort of like 21st century heavyweights.
I don't think I'm "bigging" Ingo up. He in fact became world champion by knocking out the #1 contender and then the world champion. Who else besides Machen and Patterson make up the cream of Liston's resume? Folley? KO'd soon after fighting Liston by Lavorante and Jones. Lavorante was in turn soon KO'd by old Archie Moore while Jones was decisively beaten by Harold Johnson. Valdes--0-3 against Moore and Johnson. 0-6 against Moore, Johnson, Machen, and Folley. Johnson also beat Machen, so two aging light-heavyweights were better than these heavyweight contenders. Who else is there? Harris and Bethea? Lost to Cooper. Williams? Failed to beat the Machen who lost to Johnson and was blown away by Johansson. I think it a shaky era for quality to begin with, but trashing Johansson and Cooper simply pulls it down more. The bottom line for me is Johansson KO'd two of Liston's top three opponents--Patterson and Machen. If Ingo wasn't much, it certainly raises grave issues about the quality of Liston's opposition.
