Splashed out on a pair of Reyes 14oz and walked into the gym tonight and a load of people told me send them back. They spoke of numerous cases of hand injuries caused by the glove. The reason being the padding makes it difficult to punch with the knuckles. Anyone have experience of this?
I never used them, but I would think that the Reyes gloves were better suited for fighting than training. They're known as "The Puncher's Glove". Fighters trying to protect their hands seem to use Grant like Mayweather. For training purposes though, idk what's the best
I know what you mean. I tried a pair a few years ago and thought the same thing. They are definitely different to every other pair of gloves I've ever worn.
I train and spar in mine and I swear by them. I feel like I am more disciplined when throwing punches and never has any problem with knuckle injury. I hit right on top 2 knuckles every time. As long as you wrap your hands you'll be fine.
Do you have fairly wide fists? I found Reyes to be very wide and the only way to make them not feel sloppy was to use a lot of wrap to fill the space up. Did you find the Reyes gloves awkward at first? Because they are very different to other gloves.
I do have big wide hands, and yeah, they did seem awkward. Even with big hands I still get some space in the hand compartment, also the thumb sits in a slightly awkward position. Was a big different coming from a pair of everlasts which are fairly compact. I will admit when I first tried them on I had second thoughts, but after a while of using them I loved them, and I can honestly say I have never had any pain in the hands.
I found that after trying the Reyes gloves when you went back to standard gloves again they felt awkwardly small at first. I think the Reyes gloves I tried were 14oz. But they didn't have that much padding. More like the amount you would find on 10 or 12oz regular gloves.
Exactly that, I just put on my old ones before writing so I could give a little better comparison and said to myself "damn these are tight." And yeah, padding is a bit low, I think my next pair will be the extra padding ones, so to add some more cushion for sparring. One thing though, is that the padding is very well dispersed throughout the glove. A lot of gloves seem to skimp on the wrist area whereas Reyes are well balanced. On a side note Celtic. If you are worried about your Knuckles I hear the Winning Ng-2 Knuckle guards are amazing. The look thin from the pics, but I want to pick a pair up to see how good the really are.
If my knuckles get a bit sore, and it happens occasionally, I put some thin sponge padding under my hand wraps. It makes quite a difference. Especially if your wraps aren't the elasticized type.
I use Reyes for training. I have 10s for bag/padwork and 14s for sparring. They are good gloves, well made and durable. They are actually softer than Grants IMO. I don't have particularly big hands and haven't felt any issues with space in the glove.
The reason for injuries according to my club mates was not the lack of padding, but too much off it, especially around finger area (when making a fist) - they claimed this led to incorrect punching form. I must admit I had never hear anything about this before. I bought the Reyes because I though they were the best on the market and was totally surprised to hear 3 people say get rid of them.
Reyes get mixed reviews from people who have used them. Interesting that they are used in so many big title fights.
I see what you're saying now, and yeah the padding does have a unique design. However, if you are throwing your punches wrong and landing awkwardly, you will know it based on how it feels. This will help you perfect your punches and throw with proper form, if you are throwing wrong that is.
