    Ceferino Garcia is said to be the inventor of the bolo punch. Gavilan and Leonard made it popular.

    I imagine we just don't know for many of these inventions. Shoulder-rolling is often spoken of in a modern context, but there is film of Joe Gans doing it in 1908. Dempsey used it in spots against Carpentier in 1921. I also saw Bill Brennan use the cross-arm defense a few times against Dempsey, though that wasn't a dedicated style:
