Hi, im a rather tall and lanky heavyweight, 6ft5 88-86 Kg, my problem is that i tend to panick when the fight is brought to me on the inside i tense up and stick my hands to my temples and put my head down occasionally throwing some wild hooks into thin air( im a novice btw...), as a result i tend to run alot to avoid getting to close, my trainers advice was just "grab him turn him and move away" ..., my oponents pick up on that and as they see me they immediatly try and get in close, im trying to remain calm now, look for an escape route sideways or try to throw some inside punchs, but im scared to throw inside punchs for fear of oppening up my guard...anyone have some advice?

work on your jab,not just im sparring but on the bags too.try to keep them at range with it,if that fails and you find yourself covering up try to watch where they're throwing shots,as soon as you feel their glove hit your left throw the left hook, also move your upper body when covering up to create countering opportunities.
dont move straight back, use lateral movement.
if that fails, hold, turn them then shove them away and throw your shots.
i used to do the same thing.cover until they got tired of hitting me

the usual fight plan is to jab while moving horizontally, when the get close use uppercuts against a stockier opponant and clinch.

jabs, right hands (uppercuts when super close, cross when at a slight distant) then clinch after. is the texbook method.

i have seen a guy a 6'5 middlewieght swarm the other guy when he is under pressure, and usually wins due to his hieght and leverage advantages.
