that's a great little video there.... wish we could get some one with inside knowledge to talk about those days of sparring and daily routines of these legends
People who think that Tommy Hearns automatically beats Mike McCallum without a worry and even at 154lbs, his best wieght, or 160lbs should take a careful look at this particular sparring session between the two, imagine several of the other sparring sessions they had and take into account that McCallum, as underrated as he was throughout most of his pro career, was a better 15-round fighter than Hearns was. McCallum had a slightly better record in 15-round fights than Hearns did and had the better stamina of the two as I recalled in watching them perform throughout the years during their heydays. Also take into account that two of the other Kronk members from that immediate stable during that time in the same weight class as Hearns and McCallum was Milton McCrory and David Braxton, guys that McCallum also use to spar against and eventually fought and beat in nationally televised matchups. Mike McCallum vs David Braxton was on NBC Sportsworld in the spring of 85' with McCallum coming out on top via 8th round tko and in the spring of 87' it was McCallum registering a tactical, blistering assault on Milton McCrory enroute to stopping him in 10 rounds before going on to knockout former champion Donald Curry in five rounds just 2 months later on HBO. McCallum was really durable as a fighter in his heyday and watching those nationally televised knockouts over both of his former teammates in the manner he dysectically did them in gave trainer Manny Steward take notice on his then former pupil and I think he didn't want Tommy to risk any part of McCallum from a slight perspective and therefore became the second of the top 4-elite of the 80's squad to be accused of ducking Mike "The Bodysnatcher" McCallum right behind Roberto Duran who McCallum was actually a WBA mandatory challenger for before Duran was stripped of his WBA Jr. Middleweight belt and right before he defected from Kronk to Main Events the outfit he eventually finished his career with.
