I never saw the fight. I just read a small excerpt on it. Saw it was in Sweden it was judged by a refree only no judges. It was 9-6 for Ellis. Unofficial scores had Patterson 7-4-4 the victor. 4 even rounds does not sound correct. It obviously must have been close with conflict of opinion and so many even rounds on that card. Who won, was it a good fight, and was it close? Did Patterson do enough to get a historic third HWT Championship?
I have the fight on tape-watched it a few times and it was damn close. Comes down to how you judge a fight, consistant work versus flashier work, think Holyfield-Valuev in terms of judging difficulty(ONLY! as this was a good technical action fight) I had it a one round fight to Patterson and I was rooting for him. A lot of the controversity came from a hysterical Patterson biased tv commentary IMO.
I think most give Patterson the edge. It was a fight Ellis was lucky to win. But he was more the future.
I am a huge Floyd Patterson fan, but he blew this fight by falling asleep and doing nothing in several rounds. Ellis jabbed and stole rounds, so 9-6 Ellis, is good enough for me. I have seen the fight several times - It is best without Mr Cosells terrible Pro Patterson commentary. Woller
Yeah, Woller thats about bang on. I wanted Floyd to have won it, he had a few 10-8 rounds by current US scoring but lost a lot of rounds to the busier Ellis.
