Many, many great fights. I fully agree - I can't think of a better period for great fights than the late 70s and early 80s. The 40s may have rivalled it but there's just not enough footage from that era to compare.
1982 could take up this thread on its own with Pyror-Arguello 1, Limon-Chacon 4 and Gomez-Pintor You have the Light Heavies, Saad vs Lopez 2, Saad vs Johnson being my favourites HWs weren't the best but it'd be criminal to not mention Holmes vs Norton Zarate vs Pintor Lopez vs Ayala Hagler vs Antuofermo Duran vs Dejesus 3 Leonard vs Hearns 2 Leonard vs Duran 1 To name a few
Yes it really is endless and it's not just the Championship fights. You have contender bouts like Animal Fletcher vs Jackson. It's just unbelievable. What a great time to be a young man growing up with the sport as I was. Days I'll never forget and think about often boxing wise
1978 Larry Holmes vs Ken Norton (heavyweight) 1979 Danny Lopez vs Mike Ayala (featherweight) Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson II (light heavyweight) Larry Holmes vs Mike Weaver (heavyweight) 1980 Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Yaqui Lopez II (light heavyweight) 1981 Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns I (welterweight) William Lee vs John LoCicero Bobby Chacon vs Boza Edwards I 1982 Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I (light welterweight) Bobby Chacon vs Rafael Bazooka Limon IV Wilfredo Gomez vs Lupe Pintor Katsuo Tokashiki vs Lupe Madera I 1983 Bobby Chacon vs Boza Edwards II Salvador Sanchez vs Azumah Nelson 1984 Jose Luis Ramirez vs Edwin Rosario II Tommy Cordova vs Freddie Roach
Greatest fights 1978-1984 I've definitely missed a few but just threw these down as quickly as I could: 1978 Duran-DeJesus 3 Arguello-Escalera 1 Holmes-Norton Rossman-Galindez 1 Franklin-Lopez 1 1979 Arguello-Escalera 2 Franklin-Johnson 2 Lopez-Ayala 1980 Saad-Lopez 2 Duran-Leonard 1 1981 Leonard-Hearns 1 Lee-LoCicero 1982 Sanchez-Nelson Fletcher-Green Pryor-Arguello 1 Mancini-Kim Gomez-Pintor Chacon-Limon 4 1983 Chacon- Boza-Edwards 2 1984 Ramirez-Rosario 2 Carlos Santos-Mark Medal
Thanks. I had a good list I'd been working on for years of all the best fights, but I lost it in a recent hard drive crash. Like, now that I see the post above mine, I used to have Rossman vs Galindez 1 on my list.
I have been meaning to sit down and look through some lists I have of fights to answer this question. Just have not had the time yet...but I would throw Chang vs Tokashiki into the mix as well
most fights fab 4. I just liked the era including Benitez. And Arguello vs. Pryor. How can you get any better than that. Arguello vs. Pryor and Hagler vs. Hearns so close to each other. You don't see two guys go at each other in the first round like those 4 guys did, and it was personal. A different era. We have had good era's since, but I think that was the last great era. One fight which did not happen which was advertised and looked good was Holmes vs. Coetzee. In retrospect Holmes would have destroyed him, but when they got together in public it was amusing.
Pryor/Arguello 1 Gomez/Pintor Duran/Leonard 1 Sanchez/Gomez O'Grady/Kenty Holmes/Norton Any fight with Mike Weaver
Good Post, with all due respect, the Salvador Sanchez vs Azumah Nelson fight took place on July 21 1982, in Madison Square Garden, won by Sanchez, TKO 15. Great Fight.
Pryor-Arguello I Gomez-Pintor Saad Muhammad-Johnson II Saad Muhammad-Lopez II Sanchez-Gomez Sanchez-Nelson Chacon-Limon IV Chacon-Edwards II Lopez-Ayala Duran-Leonard I Leonard-Hearns I Ramirez-Rosario II Holmes-Norton That’s my bakers dozen. Probably a third of my top fifty fights ever.
