( this came from a reader and DJ fan) Breadman, If you were my boxing professor, how would you grade my assessment for DJaocbs vs GGG coming in March? Hand speed- DJ Foot speed- DJ Power- equal Chin- GGG Athlectism- DJ Ring IQ- DJ Conditioning- DJ Thank you, Curtis/Cincy Bread’s Response: Hand Speed- DJ we agree. Foot Speed- Here is the thing. Jacobs is athletic but I don’t view his feet as fast. Just watch him. GGG cuts serious distance with his feet and he angles you. Watch Jacobs vs Ishe Smith. I really don’t know if Jacobs has a footspeed advantage. Remember it’s not a race, it’s a boxing match. Power-GGG. He has the heaviest hands in the game under 175. Jacobs can punch also but GGG’s punches seems slightly different to the naked eye. Chin-GGG we agree. But let’s take something into consideration. Chin is more important than power. The fighter who takes the other ones punches the best is the more powerful puncher. Athleticism-DJ we agree Ring IQ- GGG we disagree. GGG is very cerebral in my opinion. I’ve seen Jacobs make more mistakes than GGG. Conditioning-I would say this is a push. They both seem supremely conditioned. I do notice that GGG huffs and puffs at times. I think it’s because he throws almost 70 punches per round. That’s insane for a middleweight.
Good assessment by the Breadman. Golovkins footwork and ring generalship will or is going to be the real stand out difference in the fight.
Lol! The reader and DJ fans assessment gave me chuckle. Power is equal between the two? Lol Nah. Sorry guy Breadman was pretty spot on
I liked Bread's response there. As far as power goes, the thing to remember is that though Jacobs can crack, he's got to set to do it, and can leave his chin out there when he throws his combos. GGG's hands are heavy enough that an off balance counter still carries enough to do real damage. One thing I haven't seen brought up that could be an advantage for Jacobs is the angles he uses. His offense can come off as sloppy at times when he's aggressive, but the net result is that I've seen him hurt and stop guys multiple times from shots they didn't see coming because it was coming from a flat out weird angle. He'll have to put himself in the line of fire to do it, but there may be a chance for some scoring punches that GGG isn't expecting. The million dollar question is what Jacobs' response is going to be once he feels GGG's power. As Tyson said, everyone's got a plan until they get hit in the mouth.
I always enjoy reading Breadmans column. He's knowledgeable and more importantly unbiased. I like what he said about chin, I think thats the key right there. If Danny decides to brawl he s toast.
I agree with everything Bread said except foot speed and foot work. Golovkin has good footwork but lets be honest, he's slow as molasses. Danny is fleet footed and has good footwork. He's well coordinated (as opposed to a Khan type that has fast feet but horrid footwork). Other than that, pretty accurate, and I agree Golovkin has a higher in ring Iq, he knows when to punch at and when to punch through the target. Very few boxers can grasp that concept. Most important thing in this fight will be chin.
Hmm, no disrespect but I tend to agree with bread assessment for this one. GGG and Jacobs use the footwork differently. GGG is a predator, he doesn't need to run around or circling the ring. All he needs is trap them in the corner or minimise his opponents exit route, and I think he is a master at that.
Someone giving the iq to jacobs IMO dont know what they're looking at. Jacobs is a pretty basic fighter. There are actual wrinkles to Gs game.
Golovkin's iq is exceptional he doesn't need to use it because of the power he is a silver medalist (was robbed of a gold) and only lost 5 times in nearly 4000 amateur fights
