Was reading that Al Haymons brother Bobby was a journeyman boxer back in the 70s. He was put against Sugar Ray in Leonards 10th fight. Leonard was putting a bit of a beating on him and dropped him in the 3rd, and then stunned him on the bell before landing a big shot after the bell. Haymon couldn't continue, and when his corner complained(technically he could have won by DQ), the ref said he couldn't do anything about it( basically there was no way that the ref was DQ'ing the Olympic golden boy in his 10th fight, in front of 15,000 people). Stories over on the scene. Interesting little article. The story is more interesting for the way things were promoted/managed back then.
If true, Harry Cecchini is a piece of ****. Victor Ortiz was a golden boy from day-dot and hyped from his pro debut (though granted, not a world-famous gold medalist like Ray Leonard, and in fact not even an Olympian as Vicente Escobedo denied him a berth on the US team), and David Denkin still had the cojones to justifiably disqualify him in his eight pro bout in front of a partisan Oxnard crowd against the 11-9 Corey Alarcon. :deal Denkin > Cecchini. Integrity trumps celebrity. The rules are the rules, for everybody.
