Very interesting article about Dempsey's life with some good anecdotes from the man himself: http://www.sportthemagazine.com/746/
Thank you. Great article! I think it does a great job of capturing the essence of Dempsey The Fighter, it would be good reading for any of the Forum Warriors who fail to give Dempsey proper respect because they can't understand his mindset and underrate him based on their own academic, ivory tower criteria .
Great read about the great champ! I once owned Jack's book, How to box, and sure wish I hadn't lost it. It managed to teach the Dempsey way of fighting and how to hit hard. There will never be another like him.
No worries, guys. Its interesting that there are a couple things in there that I don't think even the (auto)biographies mention. Dempsey definitely had a colorful life for sure. Definitely shows how tough he had to be in the Old West.
Great read, Dempsey was a proper fighting man, teak tough and punched like a mule Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sorry but when you open with a titanic struggle between a supposedly middleweight Jack Dempsey and paint his opponent as a goliath when in fact Johnny Sudenberg was actually shorter, had a shorter reach, and never weighed over 160 (so yes, he was actually smaller than Dempsey and much smaller than the big heavyweight Dempsey painted) then you have a story dripping with the same nonsensical Dempsey mythmaking that his entire career was built on. Unlike you I prefer to deal in facts, not fiction. That was just the start of all of the bull**** in that article.
Just like the "facts" you posted on the Dempsey contract, that everybody laughed at, or the "facts" that you also posted about Kearns stalling. What is it about Dempsey that compels you to come on any thread that he is mentioned and add your hater comments on it? You call yourself a "historian" why? What irks you? Perhaps it is cos people talk about Dempsey and not about your boy, Greb. You have the nerve to call people "fan boys" when you are the biggest fan boy.
Dempsey's era forged tough men of steel, the likes of which we will never see again. Talk up all you want about the man-boys we have today who kiss their biceps at the weigh in.
Sorry but you cant refute Dempsey or Kearns or the people close to those negotiations own words. When Dempsey himself admits that the contract was written to duck Wills you dont really have a leg to stand on champ. Its funny how I call out a typical fantasy filled Dempsey recollection and you get mad. Would you care for me to pick apart more examples of just how ****ing off the mark this article is? I doubt it. I get it, your screen name is Dempsey1234, you obviously like Dempsey. You wanted to come on here and read an article about how Dempsey was forged from molten iron, slew giants while he was starving of hunger, came out of the west and conquered the bright lights of the civilized east. You wanted to read about his scowl, his leather skin, his iron jaw, and his granite fists. And all of that nonsense is exactly what you got. So the purpose of that article was served. Just like the people who want to read folklore get a rise out of Paul Bunyon. I dont really expect a guy who is named Dempsey1234 to get much pleasure out of an article about a guy who was pretty mediocre until a string of setups and what some say were fixed fights got him a shot at a 40 year old fat champion who hadnt fought in 3 years, had one fight in four years, who hardly trained and was pretty mediocre on the best day he ever laced on a glove. You wouldnt want to read about how after this overrated fighter fell in **** and came out smelling like a rose with a championship he ducked and dodged anyone who posed even the slightest threat by being one of the least active champions in history and only resurfaced to defend against fops, dying men, and generally men who had done little or nothing to deserve his attention. I get it DEMPSEY1234, you wouldnt want to read about that, regardless of how much more truth there is to that story than to Dempsey waging some titanic struggle with a roided up monster HW Johnny Sudenberg who just happened to, in reality, spend his entire career as a mediocre MW.
