Wild is NOT A GOOD FIGHTER. I see an awkward fighter who has not mastered boxing basics. Whose idea of a defense is to hold his gloves up. To even mention his name in the same paragraph with a Johnson. Dempsey or any othe ATG fighter is completely and utterly off the mark.
Obviously Dempsey would not have faced him but I think Johnson would have fought him were they to share an era. Why are you so against fights pitting old v new? I mean Fireman Flynn fought Johnson and he's certainly no better on film than Wilder is.
I'm not. I am completely amazed that many can see a good fighter in Wilder but at the same time not see true all time greatness in men like Johnson and Dempsey.
Dempsey would fight anyone anywhere at anytime. Don't blame the fighter for the downfalls of the historical era he fought within.
No not a middleweight who had no chance of victory and a fight that would put Dempsey in a no win situation. If he had fought him and knocked him out in a few rounds you would be on here writing how Dempsey picked on middleweights. No win situation 90 years ago and a no win situation today.
It Oscar season and Klompton is once again than man to beat for biggest wa#ker. How do you know what I saw and when I saw it. I've been renting boxing VHS since the 1980's. It was then that I noticed that not all legends the media told me was great looked great or even good on film. Cox has been studying the game for decades. The mark of an honest historian is one who can reject initial givens through research. Are you saying you NEVER changed your mind on a fighter after watching films, studying his ring records and reading new clippings? Do tell. I won't put words your mouth or speak on stuff you do not know as you attempt to do for others, but I will spot you the "Y " and the "E" for the reply.
Always admired Monte but he is way off the mark here. This is especially true of him pointing to a Dempsey expose which is decidedly off the mark by at least a mile. I expect better of him.
By 1908, the films became better and clearer. We can judge Johnson here. Dempsey looks better vs Tunney than some of his earlier fights? Clearer perhaps, better no way. Dempsey's best performance on film is Willard and that one happened earlier.
What do you think about his facing former middleweight Tommy Gibbons, who also had very little chance to win?
Gibbons was a highly rated hwt contender when he fought Dempsey. The poll in 1922 rated him very highly in terms of who the public wanted to fight Dempsey. Greb was not listed. I know that Greb beat Gibbons but that does not change the fact he was a middleweight. There is a very long list of former lt heavyweights fighting for the hwt championship. Again you would be the first one to complain that Dempsey koed a middleweight if he had fought Greb as would several others on here. Dempsey and his management faced the same no win situation 90 years ago.
He was. But presumably he was ranked below Gibbons regardless of public opinion having thrashed him utterly in their heavyweight elimination fight in New York. That fight was not close. The point is, Dempsey wasn't so shy about fighting smaller men. Carpantier had been a MW who did nothing like the damage Greb did at light-heavy or heavy. Meehan, Gibbons, Levinsky, they were all from smaller weights and had all fought at MW at some point. He wasn't shy about fighting smaller men in "no win situations" so that doesn't really sound as an excuse for their not meeting.
