Ofcourse he is saying something like that! He would never say `I never rematch Vitali becourse im not sure i could beat him again` even if that might be the better words to decribe his retirement!

 

You must be either young or new to boxing because you're really screwing up the basics. Lewis never once said he was at his peak when he fought Tyson, rather he said it was his defining legacy fight. There's a big difference between a legacy fight between two fighters past their peaks and a prime for prime match up. As much as anything it was a money fight.

Unfortunately, because Lewis decided not to give a rematch, many folks outside England will remember Lennox as a coward.

ONLY KLITSHCKO FANTICS think along the lines you do, the vast majority of people have long gotten over the fact there was no rematch and ANY boxing fan, knows that most heavyweight champions don't fight into their late 30's. Examples include; Frazier, Marciano, Dempsey, Tyson and on and on it goes, and those that did, ie Ali, were basically shot.

And the fact he's in most people's top 10 ATG list and it's almost universally agreed that a prime Lewis would give any heavyweight in history a good fight, makes your post seem ridiculous.

So perhaps instead of looking like a Klitshcko fanatic you may wish to actually study the sport a little bit and put things into perspective, which is Lewis was only one of three fights who either beat every man he faced or never lost at all.

Why didn't Lewis retire soon after TKOing Vitali then? Why did he not say "Guys, I've beaten Vitali, there's nothing out there for me to do. Here's my belt, let the young guys battle it out. I don't feel the fire anymore".

That's what a champ ought to do. Retire in style, right at the top. Why was Lennox unable to do that 8-10 weeks after the Vitali fight?

Why did he ask Vitali to supply numerous doctors opinions on if he's fit to fight, why did he wait for Vitali to become mandatory by whacking the fat whale and most of all...

Why did Lennox wait until 1 day before the WBC strips him for not fighting Vitali before he retired?

Lennox held the entire divion hostage by his indecisiveness. He should have retired in style a few weeks after the Vitali bout instead of pissing on his legacy with this disgraceful back-and-forth for 10 months.
