Interesting, but likely untrue or somewhat fabricated. Do remember that Shavers didn't fight Norton until '79, and Cooney wasn't even a pro until '77- Gerry was still working the amateurs at the time of the account given, and I doubt that Quarry knew him at all.

Yep, you're right. I think I might've fudged some of the details in my mind once I read the quote of Shavers beating Norton in '73 instead of '79.

 

True or not re Quarry’s request, apparently Ali asked Tyson to do a number on Holmes - though I guess Mike might’ve carried his own seeking of revenge on Ali’s behalf.

 

I don’t think Quarry looks as bad there as Norton, personally.

 

Norton trying to **** Jerry's wife is definitely worse than Quarry telling Cooney to rough up Norton, lol.

 

Was that a serious remark by Ali though? Ali told it like it wasn’t (recounting it later), but who knows how credible that is.

To be fair Quarry was long retired by then, and even against Norton he was a shell of what he once was.

 

Well, he did have to, because the law doesn’t allow for him attacking Norton in the street. If it did, Quarry probably would.

 

I haven’t heard Ali’s own recounting - I’ve only read it flatly reported. It may well have been light hearted - sort of.
