Ricky Burns eyes Puerto Rico showdown with Roman Martinez Jan 13 2010 by Colin Paterson, Airdrie & Coatbridge IF Ricky Burns is to realise his dream of becoming world champion, he will have to do it the hard way. The Coatbridge bruiser will fight Puerto Ricos undefeated star Roman Martinez for the world super-featherweight title. But it is looking increasingly likely that the 26-year-old will need to travel to South America in order to win the belt. Burns management team, led by promoter Frank Warren, have so far been unable to agree a deal that would see Martinez come to Scotland. Final purse bids must be in today but the smart money is on the bout being staged in Puerto Rico on March 6, and possibly in the capital city of San Juan. Burns says he will fight Martinez anywhere but hasnt completely given up on the prospect of a Kelvin Hall showdown with the reigning champ. Nothing has been finalised yet but I should find out where and when the fight will be by the end of the week, he said. Roman is a national celebrity in his country and his team want to put on a big fight for him over there. The negotiations have been going on for a long time now and it will be great to hear that everything is sorted. Frank has been handling things from our side and I would never write him off. He may yet come up with something that means the fight can be staged in Glasgow. But if it goes ahead in Puerto Rico, I will be comfortable with that. It will make things more difficult but he will be under all the pressure and be expected to perform in front of his own fans. Its great to have your home support behind you but sometimes it can inspire you when you fight in a hostile environment. But when you go to some of these places, you need to knock your opponent out just to get the draw! I know what I will be up against. My game plan will be based on speed and movement and I know I have the tools to get the job done. Burns is determined to silence the critics and prove he is a leading contender in the ring. He added: It will be a cracking fight and this is a great opportunity for me. People are saying that I havent done anything to deserve a chance like this. But I have never turned down a fight and Ive offered to fight the best in this country and they havent been up for it. I am aiming on winning this one and moving on to bigger and better
He does not want to go Puerto Rico. Martinez will get away with all sorts there and the gamesmanship will be on a whole new level to anything seen over here. I understand what he means though fighting away from home can boost a fighter. I would prefer to see it over here but who knows.
I dont think he will get the decision over there if it goes the distance, he will definetly have to knock this guy out.
