"As I got older and understood life more, I started feeling that Its just not right for a man to get pleasure, enjoyment or excitement out of another man getting beat and suffering"

Said he has not watched a boxing fight in the last 20 years.

For some reason I can't seem to forget that,

what you guys think about that statement. ?

I've had my share of negative feelings towards the sport but on a somewhat different level. I would watch a fight that would be so brutal that I would almost feel guilty afterwards. This has occurred on a number of occasions. A lot of people become very disenchanted with the sport for whatever reason and give it up entirely like the man you spoke of.

Another thing that almost caused me to stop watching boxing was a rash of bad decisions/refereeing that plagued the sport late one year. I just couldn't sit there and watch one thing and then be told by 3 morons at ringside that I didn't actually see what I saw. The truth is that the sport is so exciting and the parallels between it and everyday life are so uncanny that it's almost impossible for a die-hard fan to give it up entirely. I can't even tell you how many times I've used boxing analogies and metaphors.

very good points there bro, Honestly I dont think I can ever give up boxing, I always feel that If I ever make a lot of money in my life I will never miss a big fight live, I would be at front row next to Shane Mosley (since he never misses a fight) for every bout.

i don't get enjoyment or pleasure out of seeing someone hurt. to be honest I can't stand de la hoya but I was sad to see him get beat the way he did by manny. same with Roy Jones and Calzaghe.

i feel i get enjoyment in watching the bravery, skill, and heart involved in boxing. alot of preparation goes into a match and to watch a fighter go out there and give it is all, well for my money theres nothing better..

My grandfather has never and will never come see me fight, nor does he care to watch fights on tv anymore. He said a very similar thing, as he got older he lost his taste for violence. He used to love boxing, said friday night fights were a weekly thing for him and everyone in that era. But now, he would rather go see a broadway show or watch a comedy television show, just no interest for brutality anymore.

there's many contact sports that have pretty bad graphic situations and injuries going on. of course, there are bad intentions and at times it can get personal, but we can all relate to that too cuz sports can imitate our lives at times like art would do. for alot of us, we've grown up with this stuff and unless you can relate to it then you won't understand it. for me, any type of contact sport is an escape from my shitty job and keeps me active. seeing somebody else giving their all, even with their life on the line or being in pain, can motivate and inspire and unmotivate and uninspire. life would be alot duller without some of the drama i think. just my 2 cents

I doubt I would ever think that way, but you never know what happens as you get older.

In my head these men agree to do this, they took up the sport presumably because they like it, and at the level we are mostly discussing they are getting paid handsomely for it.

You'll have to excuse me. I'm pissed up bad, it's new years but Im back from town and I love your post. Boxing is the ultimate. Man vs man, nowhere to hide, and I think fighters find out what kind of person they are when they are hit. Do they hit back, change strategy, or go into a shell..or look for a way out. Boxing is beautiful, it's real life, not a sport.

Then I would ask the guy what fight (or series of fights) he saw that changed his perception. What had he learned in his life that chose laughter over drama...

Personally, NOTHING compares to boxing. Nothing :bart

The fame, recognition, glory, and honor the sport bestows upon an elite fighter cannot be seen nearly on the lower levels of any other sport.

No other athletes train harder mentally or physically as much as boxers.
No other athletes sweat as much as boxers.
No other athletes bleed as much as boxers.
No other athletes bruise as much as boxers.

It's one thing to run up and down a basketball and shoot hoops and another to run around a ring and throw punches. It's one thing to hit the winning homerun at the bottom of the ninth and another to score a KO in the championship rounds. It's one thing to win the Heisman trophy and another to be Fighter of the Year.

When a champion emerges victorious...he doesn't have to say "it was a team effort."
When a champion emerges victorious...not only does he get respect, but the idolotry of his countrymen.

What other sport can say they turn men into Gladiators?

It's a sport of poetry in motion...these fighters live not for the money...not for the fame...not for the belts...it's a stake at immortality. To hear their name in a roar of thousands. To be held less than a God, but more than a man.

    It's the sport of Giants

"This is a thing of beauty...A great thing of beauty. Two guys fightin' to the finish, but just one guy wins because he's the better man and THAT'S what the goddamn sport is about."

I dont watch it for brutality and I dont want to see anyone, even that twat Ruiz, permanently hurt from a fight. The worst is probably the guys like Hearns and Holyfield who didnt know when to stop and seeing them slurring and still being allowed to fight.

But if I was someone who just liked sensely brutality I would be watching Toughman contests not boxing.

The way I look at it, there are risks in any sport. Guys die in NASCAR, guys get concussions and thus brain damage in football and hockey. There are certainly risks of permanent injury in boxing but I dont feel it is any worse than many other sports.

With age typically comes wisdom and more compassion is the adage, you could so no itsrelated just the vitality of youth and the high spirit of competition, you could say no, its high levels of testosterone that make men women violent, you can chemically castrate a man to have no sex drive or aggression, you can also increase sex drive and aggression, you could say its conditioning, ****** see ****** do, if your around fighting you become violent, its social and not inherent, I would say each one has a colour of truth.

Boxing for fitness and health is fine, boxing to hurt somebody is wrong doing, I have seen fighters carry a fighter just to hurt him for a few extra rounds, that is sick, when the tide turns boxing becomes cruel, this is why so many people hate boxing, they see what normal compassionate people do, boxers and boxing as a whole is not compassionate game.

NASCAR drivers are trying to out drive each other and cross the line first, this is the game and goal, they are not trying to kill one another or hurt anybody, accidents do happen, in boxing the target is the head, it has no direct comparison in sport.

People compared fishing accidents to boxing all the time which is foolish, hundreds of Millions of people fish, billions of people cross the road and drive, death is a small every day risk of life, modern boxing in a rings only purpose is damaging another man or womans head or body.
