A few days ago, Fightnews.com was able to catch up with pound-for-pound warrior Floyd Mayweather, Jr. during an open workout at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas. Just before Mayweather bedazzled the media with his jarring workout, the undefeated former champion spoke candidly about his opponent on June 25 in Arturo Gatti. As always, Mayweather was comedic, entertaining and held nothing back. He avoided no questions and answered from his heart. He was able to answer as many questions as possible while his two hands were wrapped during preparation for his rigorous workout. Here is what he said:

What are your thoughts on Gatti?
Well, lightning strikes but thunder only makes noise.

Is this the biggest fight of your career so far?
On paper, yeah. But he ain't on the level of a Jose Luis Castillo or Diego Corrales. Is he better? I don't think so. You gotta realize how this guy has become a "world" champion. You gotta remember that he got that belt because they stripped Kostya Tszyu of the belt and let him (Gatti) fight for a vacant title. I don't feel like my job is complete until I beat Kostya Tszyu.

Why do you think Gatti is so popular?
Well, if you take what he's done... I mean, you take Mickey Ward. He is not a bad fighter, but he is a good guy to fight for a tuneup fight. What they doin' is that Mickey Ward fought a lot of guys back in the day on Tuesday Night Fights on USA and also on ESPN. What they went and did was said that, 'Mickey Ward is a good journeyman, so let's put him on HBO and let them beat each other's brains in for millions.' They made it out to be such the big deal but for me, personally, I wasn't that impressed. I'm not going to let some guy beat my brains out. The less you get hit the longer you last in this sport. I am a smart fighter. I try to dish out as much punishment but take the least amount of punishment as possible.

With that said, what did you think of last week's Castillo/Corrales fight?
I think it was good for those two guys. But you got to think that the fans don't go home happy and feeling good because I ain't trying to be in a fight like that. That is not my style; it's not me. I mean I can fight like that, but that's not me. They were out there and they say that they're the best lightweights in the world and I guess they proved it. I did my thing at lightweight already and have moved on. I don't have to badmouth Corrales or badmouth Castillo because those guys are in my past. If those same guys come to me in the future, then I'm gonna do what I'm gonna do.

Is there an opponent out there right now who could elevate you and who could really define you as a fighter?
Of course there is. But what the fans and you guys in media have to understand is that I am constantly calling out these guys after my fights. I don't need a Jim Lampley or a Larry Merchant to ask me the name of an opponent because I go out there and I call the major names out. With these other guys, they have to be asked these questions like four or five times before they can answer it. Gatti didn't really want this fight. This fight was pushed onto Gatti and he really doesn't want it. He was going to be stripped of his WBC belt; a belt he really didn't even win because it was vacant after they stripped Kostya Tszyu. I never won a vacant title in my life. Every belt that I won I actually went out there and beat a champion for it. I never won a vacant belt. They are trying to strip him of his title but he and his team are saying that it was the paperwork or because of my court case. I pleaded "No Contest" just so I could make the fight and then this guy backed out again! This guy doesn't even want the fight. I want the fans and the media to know that this guy is supposed to be Arturo "Thunder" Gatti, but he really has been just ducking and dodging me. They say that I got a big mouth and that they are going to shut me up, so let's bring it. Ain't nobody shut me up yet so come June 25, you all can get your pen and paper out because everything I have said in the past will come true. So with Arturo Gatti, I am going to box circles around him and then I am going to go in the pocket and punish him. I am going to take him out right there in Atlantic City. And then I'll just say, "I told ya'll so."

Is there anybody out there that you want to fight after Gatti?
Like I said at my last fight when I called Kostya Tszyu out. I called him out. Kostya Tszyu don't never call my name out. Every time they ask about my name, he try to duck and dodge the question and go around my name. I am not like any of these guys; I got a chin, I can give it and take it, I can box, I can fight on the inside as well as the outside and I am smart. He knows I am an intelligent fighter. Smart fighters know smart fighters.

Are you saying that Kostya Tszyu is a smart fighter?

No, I'm saying Kostya Tszyu knows that I am a smart fighter. Is Gatti on the level of Kostya Tszyu? No, he's not. Is Kostya Tszyu smart? All he tries to do is load up with the right hand and he likes to follow you around. Actually, he fought my uncle so I already know what he's about. He fought Roger Mayweather when he was an old fighter; a Roger Mayweather who was close to 40.

Does Gatti remind you of anybody you have fought before?
This fight with Arturo Gatti was supposed to happen back in 1998. I got past what I was supposed to get past in '98, which was Genaro Hernandez. He couldn't get past what he was supposed to do, which was Angel Manfredy. But since he couldn't take care of Angel Manfredy, I took care of Manfredy for him.

How high of a weight do you think you'll reach before you'll stop?
Well, the weight isn't a factor. Skills make you a great fighter, not weight. Smart fighters last longer in this sport. I still feel like I'm eighteen. I still always train and I still spar thirteen, fourteen rounds every day. Don't no other fighters train like me or work as hard as me. I'm going out to give the fans a pleasing show in Atlantic City. For so many years they tried make Floyd Mayweather out to be something that he isn't. I'm just... They try to make me, you know, be humble and be quiet. I know where my blessings come from, but this is me. I like to talk trash and this is me; I back it up.

What weight would you stop at, though?
It don't matter. I'm a throwback fighter and it don't matter. I'll fight at any weight and you're going to get results. It don't matter what weight, though. I know I can dominate welterweight and you saw that Cory Spinks wasn't nothing. Zab Judah knocked him out. Spinks proved that he couldn't hold the belt for too long. I'm a true champion and every belt that I won, I gave it back. When I beat Gatti for the belt, I am going to give it back.

How are you feeling right now?
I'm feeling great. I am already at 140 pounds. I am going to be in camp for only six to eight weeks. Gatti has to be in camp, what, sixteen weeks? Come on. I don't need to be in a training camp that long. I'm a true professional inside the ring and outside the ring. That is what you call a true champion.

People are talking a lot about how Buddy McGirt seemed to have made Gatti into a good boxer. Do you think that maybe Gatti will try to outbox you?
You've got to realize this and I've been at home thinking about this; what top, tough Hispanic fighter has he fought except for Oscar? And we saw in that fight that it was a mismatch. It's no different than in this fight. I don't mind going into his turf.

Do you think he'll have an advantage in that building on his own turf?
No, because his fans don't get in there and fight for him. You know I already know how a fight like this is going to go down there. He gonna get in there, throw a few punches which he gonna miss. He'll probably land them on the shoulder or the arm and you know how the crowd is, they gonna cheer. I'm gonna relax, get to doing what I'm doing and I'm gonna punish him. And once I get to punishing him, don't nobody gonna be cheering no more. I'll make the whole arena quiet. You'll see; it'll be a total mismatch.

Do you think you'll win over the fans?
I'm not there to win over the fans; I'm there to win a fight. Even when I knock him out, they are still gonna boo. What you gotta realize is that in the sport of boxing, you got good guys and you got bad guys. It's what the people want. When Oscar De La Hoya fought Pernell Whitaker, Pernell was the bad guy. When Oscar fights Felix Trinidad, Trinidad is the bad guy. But when Bernard Hopkins fights Trinidad, Hopkins is the bad guy. So in this sport, you gotta have a good guy and a bad guy. It's like that. This fight kinda reminds me of Jerry ****ey versus Larry Holmes.

Do you consider yourself as the bad guy?
It's not what I consider; it's what you all already know. I'm the bad guy anyway.

Do you think you'll ever be thought of as the good guy?
It don't matter. As long as they keep paying me those good paydays, you can make me the good guy or the bad guy.

We just saw the great fight between Corrales and Castillo and Gatti had those memorable wars with Mickey Ward. Do you think it's possible that Gatti will force you into a war?
What? Who… What? Has this guy, Mickey Ward, ever won a world title?! You need to talk to me about an outstanding guy who has won a world title. They say that he knocked some guy out with a body shot, but that guy had been off for a year and a half! I see how they play the games, too. I constantly ask if I can fight four times a year. I constantly want to fight, constantly want to stay busy but they just keep me on the shelf. They constantly want to get me knocked out but it's not going to happen because I'm always on my P's and Q's. I'm constantly asking to fight four times a year but I am not fighting.

    Who is "they?"
They know who "they" is and you know who "they" is. I constantly want to fight. I want to fight. I want to stay active.

What do you think about finally headlining a pay-per-view event?
I think it's a dream come true. But I honestly think that if I was with Don King, I would have been on pay-per-view a long time ago. I honestly believe that because I was promised things in the sport of boxing that didn't come true. You know, what's meant to be is meant to be.

Is it too late to go with Don King?
Um… (some thinking) No. I'm still young. I still got a lot of fight left in me. He could keep me more active. See Zab Judah fight? He fights a lot and I'd love that, to be that active and to stay sharp. Sometimes the fans say that I had a boring fight, but you're going to get a boring fight if you don't keep me active. If you keep me active, you're going to get an exciting fight because I'm staying sharp. Believe me; don't nobody in this sport do what I do.

Do you think you could be a huge PPV draw?
Of course. If you put heavyweight numbers and promotions behind lightweights, you are going to get heavyweight results. If you put big money behind the small guys, you are going to get heavyweight results regardless. I know it.

Is this going to be a coming out party for Floyd Mayweather? Will this fight with Gatti make you a superstar?
It's just going to be another easy victory. Man, come on. I flew, what, three thousand miles? I don't even know how far it is, but I flew all the way to the East Coast for the press conference, but he's sick. But then the next day he go and has his own press conference. I'm showing you what kind of guy you all be dealing with. This guy is always telling you how much he wants to fight but the guy couldn't do a press conference. He can't do a press conference on Friday, but he can do one on Saturday? Tell me this: What makes you so sick on Friday that you aren't going to be that sick on Saturday? Come on…

Why do you think he did that?
He nervous. He scared. He knows that he been milking HBO. I know why we are fighting there because it'll be a good gate. It'll be a great gate there and that's why we're doing it. But you know we can do the same gate in Grand Rapids. This guy is made out to be some great thing because he can go to Atlantic City and sell out arenas. I can go to Grand Rapids and sell out arenas, too. That's where you at! That's where you reside at. But they say that Gatti sells tickets so crazy! He sells tickets so crazy! Okay, he sells tickets so crazy but when I got on board, you see how quickly those tickets sold? He never sold out an arena before by himself in one day. It took me. It always takes two. To make a super fight, you need two.

Are there any other guys you'd like to fight after Gatti if you go up to 147?
I'd love to fight Sugar Shane. It's not like I don't like these guys, but it's a business, man. When you do interviews with me, I am not going to disrespect these guys but I also ain't finna kiss these guys' asses, especially if he ain't a great fighter. If the guy is a great fighter, then I'll take my hat off to him and give my respect. Gatti will go and say how much he did for the sport. All he did for the sport was make that mat bloody.

Who do you respect these days?
There are a lot of guys who I respect. Felix Trinidad, Winky Wright, Corrales, Castillo; all those guys. Those guys go out there and prove themselves because they've fought the best and they've been in wars. You want to talk about real fighters, I go to the East Coast, I go Down South, I go to the West Coast. But with this guy, they keep him right in the same area. They keep him right in Atlantic City, Connecticut or New York; right in the same area. It's basically fighting in your own home. Go on, go somewhere else and fight! Be a risk taker!

At this point, Floyd's hands were finished being wrapped and his workout had to begin. For almost two straight hours, Floyd wowed all in attendance with his stunning mitt work, jump rope ability, speed bag prowess and many other techniques. During his in-ring mitt work session, young Floyd barked out:

"Gatti had to have plastic surgery on his face! I know he did! He had plastic surgery just like Michael Jackson!"

Towards the end of his workout in the midst of doing painful-looking exercises in the ring, Mayweather rolled halfway out of the ring and snagged one of the dozens of Krispy Kreme doughnuts that were on the table adjacent to the ring. He then stuffed his face with the doughnut.

"See? I can eat whatever I want. I am a true champion who can afford to eat these doughnuts! I'd like to see someone like Gatti eat these while training."

I tried searching for the original...as well as another one that was a video interview...but came up with this instead. Still good.

Floyd lost my respect as a fighter for the path he choose post gatti.
His inactivity, stupid racist comments, cherrypicking, wasting his potential.
If only he had kept this stay active fight the best mentality people would respect him much more.

Ive not even read this as I would imagine it reads like normal Mayweather talk.

I want Tszyu - but Ill fight Gatti for more money
I want Winky but Ill fight Judah for more money
I want Cotto but Ill fight Mitchell for more money.
I want Margarito but Ill fight Baldomir for more money.

And so on and so on.

Oh and all the dangerour fighters are ducking me or want more than 1% of the PPV's.

If Pac wanted to go to 154 he's have to start taking steroids - and Pac don't take steroids. No...147 is his max, and even this weight is far above his optimum.

Good interview, calling guys out and not being obsessed with the Money May persona.

I think it's the Oscar fight that really changed him- like someone said before, you change when you start making 20mil+ per fight.
