The race card comment was one you play often when someone has the facts on Johnson's fights that disagree with your rooting interests.

As another poster pointed out, Johnson was in shape for the Ketchel fight shortly after the Kaufmann fight, and the Box rec weight for Johnson in the Kaufmann fight looked to a good weight for him.

On the film Ketchel looks horrible, yet the time he lands something close to solid, Johnson goes down, rolls over and has to brace himself to get up. This is a middle weight here that did this.

As I stated before there are some fights that suggest Johnson didn't take body shot so well. It seems that Kaufman figured it out late in the match which made the final two rounds of a short 10 round title fight rather interesting.

As usual Johnson gets excuses. He wasn't in shape, he took so and so lightly, the fight was a fix, he wasn't hurt, blah, blah, blah...

I have never called anyone on this forum a racist prove me wrong and I will leave.

Not long ago you suggested that the 185lbs ,Johnson weighed for his fight with Langford was close to his best weight ,now 209lbs is a good weight ,which is it?

Jim Jeffries, when champion fought Joe Kennedy over 4 rds.
Jeffries, also as champion defended against Jack Finnegan 1-2-2 over 10 rds,but that is acceptableto you.
Johnson fights 191lbs Kaufman ,wins in a landslide and that is some how shameful to you. Are you bipolar?
I love how ,when you can't answer a question ,you simply ignore it ,great tactic.:good:rofl

I've already put up numerous quotes from the original article stating Johnson was out of shape for Kauffman. I've since seen numerous other reports and all of them at least mention in passing the fact that Johnson wasn't in shape for that fight. I'll pop some up later on.

Six weeks is LOADS of time to get in shape.

He's not "getting excuses". He's having the REALITY of the fight reflected in the contemporary press. And what do you think this excuse is for? It's an utter domination and possibly a complete shut out.

    McGrain,

I do not dispute Johnson was the clear winner here.

Do you think Kaufmann goes the distance with other great champions?

I hope you are a man of your word, as you have called me a racists before. Please leave now with dignity.

I'll pull an old quote of yours:

Yes, and Jeffries KO'd them quickly, and was not bothered by body shots.

But you do seem to be disputing that Johnson was not in shape for this fight.

Possibly. I think he was rugged and tough enough that he might have done ten rounds with one or two. The boxing strategy and the ruggedness he displayed in his 39 round KO of Jim Barry might get him through ten against Jeffries or Fitzsimmons for example. I feel confident he could do ten rounds with Tunney or Corbett.

But this rather misses the point concerning Johnson's style. This was a no risk performance from an out of shape fighter who suspected (correctly, perhaps) that he might gas, in my opinion.

The box rec weight here for Johnson was not that heavy. While I don't think Johnson was in his best shape, he wasn't in his worse shape either.

I think Tunney would Ko Kaufmman. Indeed Kaufmann was Ko'd 5 times in a career that was not exactly a long one in terms of total listed fights.

Certainly, he wasn't in his worst shape, given that he fought as a semi-pro in his late fifties, but he was overweight and hadn't trained properly according to every source i can find.
